With a phone on every person I don't see the point of a man wearing a watch except for show and a gaudy or expensive watch is pretentious and reeks of douchebaggery.

With the invention of elastic, I don't see the point of wearing a belt anymore

With Velcro, I don't see the point in having shoe strings on any pair of shoes

With better fitting shirt collars, I don't see why people wear ties anymore

You can go on all day with stuff like that. Mechanical watches intrigue me. They look good and are often an engineered work of art. I'm not excited to wear a watch just because it looks a certain way though. I like knowing that it can hold time quite precisely while using a mechanical technology that is hundreds of years old.

Some people appreciate the mechanical aspect of a well crafted automatic watch (which can be purchased for as little as $100 from certain vendors). Does it serve an absolutely necessary function, no, but neither does most consumer goods these days.

I really can't wear anything smaller than 42 or else it doesn't look right on my wrist.

Is your wrist over 8 inches? I find it hard to believe that you couldn't wear a Tudor Black Bay or Pelagos
