Wife brought one to Texas de Brazil. They charged $6 per slice to cut the cake for us. Mandatory no exceptions. Last time that happens. Told the wife thanks but pls don't do that stupid shite again.

Worked at a restaurant years ago. Myself, nor anyone I worked with thought this was a big deal. Heck, most workers like it because the people that bring the cake rarely ate it all, and gave the rest to the staff.
This, it didn't matter to me either way. The only cakes we sold were small maybe two serving size cakes that were in a freezer that we nuked in the microwave before serving.

I used to be a server. We loved it because the party usually offered the servers a piece of cake if they had a lot left over. Made for a great night at work.

If you know what you're doing as a server, a big table can be a jackpot on tips. Problem is, a lot of servers really have no idea how to make it as efficient as possible. Instead of refills, bring a pitcher. Make a list with a diagram of the table and put numbers what goes where. A lot of servers get lazy and want to treat a 20 top like it's a family of four. Make sure you are timely with appetizers, salads, etc. I have been many times where ten separate checks at the table paid at least a 45-50% tip because the server was on the ball. I did it last week. I also brought a cake (from Baum's) that I promise was better than any dessert item on the menu. Even gave out servers each a piece to eat in the kitchen.
Now a table full of thugs, good luck...

My friends brought me this cake when we were out last week. They only asked that I leave the tip.

Worked at a very nice restaurant in BR. Very common thing for people to bring in bday cakes. Golden rule here is if you bring a cake to a nice restaurant, it better be a nice cake. Otherwise it'll just look out of place

This is why I can see people in casual restaurants writing an article like the one in the OP.
I worked in a casual seafood joint. There was a certain type of people that came in with 20 family members and balloons and cake. But.. with or without the cake, they'd have been a bitch to deal with.

Really not any different than bringing a nice bottle of wine to a restaurant.
I wouldn't think to do this either... If you go to a place that serves food/drinks, you don't bring your own food/drinks. And it slows my service when 17 waitresses have to walk to your table to sing you happy birthday. It may be common, but that doesn't make it less trashy.

Do you even go out to eat bro

I don't see why this is trashy. What if the restaurant won't fix a cake the person's birthday? So long as you order everything else on the menu and drinks, then why not? Give the guy a break, it's his birthday.

FYI to everyone.
Do not let these lil attractive delicious looking babies suck you in at the store. They're a lot of work and all you get is a tiny cake.

I don't do it either. Even though I don't think there's anything wrong with it and I know staff generally isn't THAT bothered by it, I would never do it myself.
First of all, I fricking hate cake. But if I must give the birthday girl/boy a cake, they can come to my house after dinner for cake and drinks.

It's trashy because nice restaurants have long waits. It's miserable to be waiting 45 min past your reservation because a party is holding up 6 tables to eat a cake that they didn't purchase. On a slow night, sure...
