When I was a kid, it was banchan, or kimchi and it usually had a piece of saran wrap on the top between lid and container to keep the smell down.
ETA-My memory also tells me that the containers were so old the label had started to wear off.

Mom labeled ours "Possum and Stray Cat." It was leftovers that she'd feed to a stray cat and a possum that would hang out on our back porch. Friends that came to visit our place from college weren't so sure they wanted to eat at our place when they opened the 'fridge and saw it with the label.
