On Google maps, the collapsed part of that bridge looks terrible before the collapse. Genoa looks third world-ish

Another famous Italian engineering tragedy, the Vajont Dam:



A rockslide caused a 250 meter wave of water to breach the dam, killing 1,910 people. The blue sky you see in the photo would have been a wall of water.
