Is it because of creating the genre of "california beach music"?
And if they hadn't, we would have never gotten this cinematic masterpiece...

Paul McCartney‘s kids said that McCartney would play “God Only Knows“ over and over again in their house. He listened to it incessantly. He once said that it’s the one song that he really wishes he would’ve written.

Is it because of creating the genre of "california beach music"? I know who they are, and that they were very popular back in the day. Just curious if there is more to it than that. I'm fairly ignorant regarding the group, though i do recognize their presence in pop culture.
I'm accepting of the many downvotes incoming.
Paul McCartney has said that he believes God only knows by The Beach Boys is the greatest song ever written, so there's that

The three brothers together again, hopefully in heaven, but God only knows.

I didn't even know he was sick!
Brian Wilson has been struggling with mental health issues for a long long time. He would have put out more stuff than he did except he would get in such bad shape mentally and with drugs he couldn’t finish things.
Believe he had dementia in last years of his life also

It has been a few years since I’ve seen it, but I recall the movie about him “Love & Mercy” being really good.
Very good movie. I’m old enough to have heard the music though some years after original release but didn’t know any of the back story. If Brian’s prick of a father had his way very early in Brian’s career some amazing music would have never happened.
Brian Wilson was truly a tortured genius from outside and inside influences.

Skit: Rescued by Belushi and Ackroyd
Solo “Good Vibrations” on SNL
McCartney inducting Wilson into Songwriters Hall of Fame
He did what very few songwriters have actually done - written the perfect song. “God Only Knows” is so intricate and flows in a way that producers and arrangers have tried to copy for decades. His creative, sometimes psychotic energy directly inspired “Sgt. Pepper” album. Can go on and on.
Someone mentioned it early but “Love & Mercy” is a fantastic film. Glad Brian got help and was able to have another great run late in his career — and finish that “Smile” album.
Crazy that the greedy, money hungry, suing Mike Love - who owes his entire career to Brian - is the last one standing.

Long Promised Road is a great documentary about and with Brian Wilson too. Was put out a few years ago.

Ever? I'm in my 40s and all i know of him is good vibrations.
a) that's your own fault
b) the "greatness" of another person is not determined by how much a rando knows about him

It definitely is. Dano and Cusak play him so well.
Paul Giamatti was great as that POS Dr Eugene Landy as well.
