Long story short, this guy I know is bitching to me about additional fees LSU adds to tuition. It made me think, and I started to agree with him.

Can anyone go through this list and point out one fee that is not complete bullshite. What is going on at LSU? State schools man, state schools. Especially in a corrupt state as Louisiana.

breakdown of fee bills for a summer semester below (only 1 class, 3 hours):

Typical Louisiana, creates TOPS, eventually tries to make it a needs based program, and completely ends around it by racking up the fees.

$356 worth of Lazy River fees for one summer class. Yikes.

Oh wait you have to take 6 hours over the summer to use the UREC for “free”

Can I just choose to be a mediocre student and save a couple hundred bucks?

They give fancy names to these fees. They should call it the fee to hire extra teachers.

quote:

Student Excellence Fee - This fee is used to fund both academic colleges and campus-wide support functions for the purpose of enhancing the student experience both in and out of the classroom. The fee supports existing faculty as well as related priorities such as providing additional instructors and teaching assistants to open more class sections where needed to reduce class size and to enhance supplemental instruction activities intent on increasing retention and graduation rates via more individualized instruction for at-risk students. In addition, funds are used to enhance other academic support and campus-wide operations to ensure adequate services for all students.

Yeah, funding additional classes to reduce the student/teacher ratio is bullshite.

Honestly, that one seemed legit. LSU is a huge school and they need money to hire additional faculty to teach classes.

I had a "full tuition scholarship" to LSU Law. The fees were outrageous.

Same here. I was under the impression that college was way more expensive.

That's also not for a full-time Fall or Spring semester.

In mild defense of the fees: the blame is TOPS.

Because the state is on the hook for tuition increases, they block them.

For fricks sake, wasn’t it posted just today about how LSU’s cost of attendance has it as one of the best value colleges in the US?

What difference does it really make if the charge is called tuition or an “academic excellence fee?”
