The poles are 0m apart and the picture is bullshite

God dammit I hate these problems

Most companies (like Google) don't even ask these in interviews anymore because they're meaningless ways of judging someone's coding ability

the point of the puzzle is to focus on the information you are given (80M cable, midpoint at 10M/40M, 50M poles) and not the information you are not given (the distance between the poles). its common problem solving discipline, they want to see how you process the information you need to arrive at a solution

80m

The parabolic dashed line is a decoy. It doesn't say that that line is the cable. Each hash is 10m using the line showing midline height as a scale. 80m going by the hashes.

0m

If the cable is 80m, and it must go down from 50m to 10m using at least 40m, then back up again using at least 40m. So they have to be adjacent, or even the same pole.

It could be an elastic cable. No one said it was inelastic- and no one said what minimum bend radius it would have at the bottom if doubled back on itself.

First choice: use a ruler and hope it’s to scale

Second choice: gonna have to know the function of that parabola

Third choice: I’m missing something obvious

Im guessing what screws most people up is the picture (which can be considered information). If we assume that the numbers are correct, the picture is impossible. But you still have to make that assumption.
