That map is shite. It's actually rampant in lake Tuscaloosa and the Black Warrior river. Just nobody can tell the difference.

It poses no threat unless it enters via the nasal passages and penetrates the cribiform plate.

The map indicates confirmed cases of human infection (meningoencephalitis), not presence of the organism in the waters various states.

can you share any of the symptoms she experienced for others to watch out for?
you never know. it may be beneficial to someone.

Sounds like a sequel for UnderCover Brotha.

NOLA has nasty water. It's one of the first things I noticed when I lived down there for a year in the 90s.

True statement. It poses no threat unless it enters via the nasal passages and penetrates the cribiform plate. Naegleria fowleri is the amoeba. Scruffy has not heard about any cases involving ingestion. It is already very rare though.
Isn't it nearly 100% fatal? Or am I thinking of another brain infection?
I remember reading about a young girl that was infected and after extensive treatment she actually survived- the only known case wherein someone survived the infection.

Life is 100% fatal.
Deal with it.

Saw a case when I was a pediatric resident. Young kid had been diving in a pond. Force of the water into his nose allowed it to penetrate via the cribiform plate. Bad way to die.
Was warned by allergist not to use tap water to do nasal saline washes because it can always be in regular tap water.

Sorry it took a while to respond.
She woke up with an eye irritation. Felt like something in it. Asked me to pick up some stuff for dry eye. Was pretty much just like a welders flash.
She went to her optometrist who said she had a scratch. Gave her steroids and sent her home. Her eye would swell and was hard to see out of. I'm an ugly motherfricker, so I thought she just didn't want to look at me.
If she would open it with her fingers it would pour out tears. Very light sensitive on both eyes. It continues to get worse with the same symptoms and I was accused of giving her herpes and syphilis as those were diseases of some of the symptoms. All I can say is,
IF YOU OR YOUR LOVED ONE WEARS CONTACTS, MAKE SURE THEY ARE CLEAN AND DO NOT SWIM IN THEM ANYWHERE, NOT EVEN THE SHOWER. My wife is a nurse in a nursing home and is very vigilante about staying sanitized.
My 2 young kids are taking it pretty hard.
I wish I could help more in prevention. We went to grand isle memorial day weekend and she went in the water that saturday wearing contacts. She first had irritation on june 9.
We will probably never know how she got it but my family won't wear contacts again.
Docs say it will take months of recovery, we don't know the damage yet.

Sorry to hear that. Prayers for her recovery. That's awful.
Is she at risk for losing her vision? Hopefully no chance it will spread anywhere else....?
