The Advocate Link to the Article

quote:

The school district announced late Monday morning that there were a total of 531 absences out of 3,328 instructional staff.

quote:

Monday’s sickout was organized by one of the two teacher unions in the parish, the East Baton Rouge Parish Association of Educators, as a protest to the “Smart Start” plan announced by Narcisse at a March 31 press conference. The union is also urging school employees to pack a parish School Board meeting Thursday night where the board will consider Narcisse’s proposal.

quote:

The Smart Start proposal calls for most school employees to come back to work on July 19, two weeks earlier than planned, and for students to join them on July 28, eight school days earlier than were supposed to return.

quote:

In return for starting early, Narcisse is proposing paying employees an additional $1,300 stipend. Most other local districts have already paid similar stipends as a way of thanking employees for the difficulty of working during the coronavirus pandemic.

They are asking them to work a little more, paying them extra for it, and they still protest. Public school teachers in BR are fricking ridiculous.

Funny, I managed to show up to work every day during this thing aside from the 14 days I was out with the weak virus.

Any teacher not willing to show up should be canned.

If I paid school taxes I’d be ready to burn the bitch down.

Teachers are heroes. They tell us all the time.

Strikes are also violations of the contract most of the time.

They shouldn’t be protesting, but what is eight extra days in EBR public schools going to accomplish?

All of the sudden that school tuition bill seems to be a better value than just a day ago.

A brand-new teacher with a bachelor's degree in EBR starts off with a day rate of 250/day.

The super wants them to work 10 extra days, and wants to pay them $130/day.

How many of you would agree to work 10 extra days each year, at what is basically half-pay?

Article is confusing, I assumed 2 weeks meant 8 days with kids and 2 days of professional education. If they just have to work the 8 days with kids, that's still an extra 162.50 per day, well below the pay rate for a starting teacher (and teachers with any experience have an even bigger gap).

I agree. screw that. teachers signed up for a job, with a certain amount of days off. school board wants to start changing shite up, at least pay them what they are worth. I couldn't pull that shite in my line of work, our staff would all laugh at me.

It is in anticipation of closing school when its too hot, too cold, potential of a thunderstorm, or hurricane is hitting the landmass to the east of Louisiana. Its a good technique, add extra days now so that you don't have to add them later after the unwarranted closings during the year. I like this new superintendent already.

I thank God every day for the epiphany I had 24 years ago where I decided not to become a teacher.

Right??

The teachers in our area got a COVID stipend, that was due to putting up with the BS this year, not for them working extra days.

If you are going to require extra work, you need to at least pay them their regular amount of pay for those days.

Our staff are paid a salary with an expectation that they will work X number of hours per year. If they work more than that, we pay them more.

It's not half pay, its probably around what most teachers would get in their regular paycheck after taxes are taken out. the Stipend is $1300 straight up.

Uhh... the stipend is taxed and considered for pension contributions, etc.

Super isn't walking around handing out $1,300 envelopes of cash...

I don't know. After about a week, my kids public school teachers were communicating with them on a daily basis, providing lessons, eventually doing zoom, etc.

In any event, it's stupid to "make up" work 15-16 months later.

They are going early for additional training
