Have you seen the new school? You do realize that it is now a magnet school?

Read up on the stats from somewhere ( I don't have them) but it's awfully hard for a private school kid(in br k-8) to get into BRHS. It's almost like the administration says "our schools weren't good enough for you before, so you can't have a spot now." They basically cater to BR public/charter school kids.

He's not getting into Baton Rouge High. The feeder school for Baton Rouge High is the academic middle schools. I moved my son out of private school into the academic middle school so he would have a shot at Baton Rouge High. They only allow 1% of kids not from the magnet program into Baton Rouge High and that likely is a couple of gifted students that didn't go that magnet school route.

Lee high is brand new so that's a different story. Lee high was built in part because of the kids not getting into Baton Rouge High.

Would be great to have him take AP classes in HS so he would start as a sophomore in college

He is already on track to do that now. Taking Algebra I Honors and English I Honors in 8th Grade.

There was a kid from CLA that got into BR High this year. Was a life long CLA student and made the same kind of grades as my son. Chances may be slim but he has a chance.

I know plenty of people who got into BRHS from private middle schools. If it were me, I'd hope for U-High and if he isn't accepted keep him in a private school (even if not CLA). The new Lee High is probably a good school, but it's so new that it's hard to judge it at this point. BRHS is obviously another good school, but I would choose most BR private schools before BRHS.

This past summer over 30 kids in the 8th grade left U high to go to other schools instead of entering 9th grade. This was both Boys and Girls. The school is not at all concerned with individual children because it is relatively inexpensive and has a waiting list. Unless you donate Gyms and help pay for the star athletes tuition expect to be a number. Seems that they care more about Football and Basketball championships than the overall wellfare of the student body. If your child can jump high and run a football it may very well be a great place for them. They will go out of their way to make sure the recruited athletes succeed to better the athletic program.

We are also applying to high schools and I have toured the new Lee High. The facility is state of the art, the kids are polite and seem very interested in their education. With that said, we are trying to get our daughter into the Academy or U High. The community around Lee High has not embraced it and our child would have nothing in common with kids that attend Lee.

I had heard (but was unsure) you could not apply to both schools, had to choose one or the other. Is that correct ?

Lee will eventually have baseball and basketball, if that is an interest

You have to apply to one school as your first choice and then list another as a second choice.

My son plays baseball so that is a plus for Lee and it is MUCH closer to where we live. BR High is on the other side of town for us.

Why in the world would anyone take the ACT in middle school?

There are 4th graders that take the ACT (explore) test. My son did it in 5th grade and will take the PSAT in 6th grade. Some kids are gifted and are asked to take above grade level testing. It's optional but I like to see where he measures up against other kids in the country.

Nearly every private school student who applied to BRMHS last year, got in.

The feeder schools do not take up all the seats now because many of those kids now go to Lee.

Every student who applied to BRMHS last year either got a seat at BRMHS or was offered Lee.

Lee is a STEM school with a focus toward dual enrollment.

BRMHS is general college prep with a focus toward AP.

We didn't take it until 8th grade which is Jr. High. I had him take it because I wanted to see if he really was as smart as his grades would indicate or if his straight A's were just a product of a school that wasn't challenging. I also wanted to see how he stacked up against other kids taking it in the 8th grade. We could have taken it several years ago as his Stanford Achievement Test scores were high enough that he was invited to do the Duke Talent Identification Program where you take the ACT in 4th or 5th grade but we decided against that.

The Duke TIP kids that take the ACT in 8th grade average a 13 on the ACT. If you make a 19 in 8th grade you knocked it out of the park.

BR high will be very academically challenging
Lee will be less and its a new school. lot of kinks to be worked out. Lee will have a basketball team.

What kind of kids does your son hang out with?
BRMHS and Lee will have more nerdy Asian kids , weird white kids, and a mix of black kids. If he is into sports, dont send him here. If he is a normal, all american boy, dont send him to either of these places. Catholic might work

Baton Rouge High would be first choice, Lee would be second. I wouldn't hesitate to put my kid at Lee, but BRH has a proven reputation. I think in the future Lee will be a really good school too though.

From what I have heard there are some things offered at Lee that BRH doesn't seem to have, like the digital arts program and robotics. I think there are more traditional art/theater/music classes available at BRH.

BTW, magnet applications are due December 5, so make the decision for 1st choice/2nd choice quickly.

Yes. I started the application today. I was originally going to apply to both but when I started the application I saw that you could only apply to one school and list a second choice.

For BRMHS, students in Sherwood, McKinley or another magnet middle school will get priority, the few spots left will be gifted , then private schools.

Lee will take the bulk of the rest.
Also, BRMHS will have many open spots for 10th and up, alot fail out after freshman year.

If you are a white upper class person, your child will not have much in common with the student body. they will have upper class asians
