Starting Tuesday, Baton Rouge libraries will no longer charge fees for overdue items — including those that are already late and accruing fines.
It's part of an effort to "reduce barriers for teens and adults that need the Library's resources whenever and wherever they are," officials said in a news release.
"Like most libraries, the amount of money brought in is very minimal and takes more time than it brings value," said Kirsten Edson, deputy director of the East Baton Rouge Parish Library. "The library also wants to reduce pain point interactions with the public and be a welcoming place where access to materials is equitable."

A/C and social media are the only resources they're using

The Harris County (Houston) libraries got rid of late fees back during Covid. They haven't brought them back and I don't think they will.

My town just built a new library. It’s pretty damn nice.

Libraries here are actually very nice. Main branch on Goodwood is surprisingly very nice, clean, and modern.

Does this apply to movies ?

This is reasonable.

This is laughable.

The BR library system has more money than they know what to do with due to their dedicated tax. They don’t need someone’s $0.50 late fee.
I also don’t think that it will increase book theft. There already wasn’t any real penalties for not returning a book.

I remember in my youth, how I yearned to check out a library book, but would not for fear that I would fail to be responsible enough to return it on time, and be faced with an insurmountable fine that would always be on my permanent record.
So i didn't ever check out library books.
For that very reason.

If people don't bring books back, how is that equitable access for anyone?
I think they just shoehorn those terms in there, even when it doesn't make sense, so no one can question it.
This push of no accountability, responsibility, or consequences for certain segments of our population is really something to behold.
