High prices in place to deter less desirables from relocating there, maybe?

I would rather live in Wyoming than Montana. The winters are milder than Montana winters.

I don't believe that this is correct.

One of my aunts lives there and is friends with a man named Jim Dolan.

He creates art using various metals that is extremely impressive (in my opinion at least). We were able to take a tour of his shop to see some of his creations and watch him work a bit. Was very cool.

but it seems like that won't work out. Really good guy. Maybe he can drive in from farther away.

It is the location that's driving the price. Even I am not familiar with the area, I am very familiar with real estate. The first thing to do is ask some of his peers or Realtors about affordability of the surrounding areas. Secondly, his search should be 10-15 miles away for more reasonably priced homes.

BZN isn’t a sprawling city so 15 miles from campus puts you in the mountains, on a farm, or in Belgrade which will be slightly cheaper by maybe 10-15%. Then you have to deal with commute during the winter which will vary day to day. Hopefully on the bad days the plows have already started. I’ve missed the airport exit from the interstate because I could see the giant green sign through the snow.

You can live around a bunch of poor white folks for not terribly much in parts of Appalachia and the Plains. If you want lily white and fun to live in, yeah, it costs a good bit. Worth it if you can swing it.

From the National Weather Service

Look at windchill, it’s a real thing

You cant even buy something "very nice" in Alexandria for that.

Seriously go look at a 350k house in Alexandria. At best it's middle of the road. Typically nicer older homes that haven't been updated since 1970.

It can be exceptionally cold in January and February on certain days, but that kind of temperature isn’t crazy common. A lot of the state didn’t even have snow last Christmas.

You couldn't give me the entire state of Montana if I had to live there in the winter.
