I’m having a hard time picturing this as well. For the arrow to have “impaled” him, it seems it would require significant force. And the arrow would have to be firmly secured in its location to give enough resistance.

A properly sharpened fixed blade broadhead penetrates very easy with minimal force.

I have lost arrows in cut grass. I am not searching for an arrow in tall brush.

While that makes sense, what’s baffling is was the arrow sitting there with the broad head pointing up to initiate the impalement? Common sense would say the broadhead would be imbedded in a tree or in the ground so that if someone fell on it, the penetration would come from the fletching end.

A miss fired arrow can land in the ground or thick grass with out ever hitting anything solid. The can also get pulled from a hunters quiver as they walk through thick grass or brush and get left behind. It’s not that uncommon or baffling.

maybe he saw a nice arrow and wanted it, he was attempting to dislodge it and the force of the release caught him in the leg

I am having trouble picturing this too

Five years ago we lost a few arrows and even broadheads in thick brush that had been pulled off of our quivers. Crazy thing was we found everything we lost when back tracking. Heck one guy lost is sandwich on day 1 and found it on the 5th day of the hunt untouched in the Colorado mountains.

Sounds like a Skyrim soldier's tale.

I have found two broadhead arrows while bow hunting at Wheeler Wildlife Refuge here in Alabama. They had been there at least a year and maybe more. The shaft was sticking out of the ground. Both were under a large White Oaks. This is the main reason I have almost given up on public land hunting.

Imagine being killed by an arrow. That would suck, an arrow killed you? They would never solve the crime. "Look at that dead guy. Let's go that way."

Is it possible the guy shot himself with the arrow, or fell while holding an arrow? And he’s too embarrassed to admit it?

I'm not an expert on bows but it seems like it would be difficult to accidently shoot yourself with one.

rode four miles to the Elk Park Trailhead north of Steamboat Springs, hiked 2.5 miles to reach the South Fork of Mad Creek, then bushwacked upstream and through dense timber and knee-deep swamps another 1.5 miles
