Don’t do your shoplifting in Southie. The default there wasn’t to call the police long before this law change.

This is not about requiring, or even allowing, homeless people to go into anyone's house.

For example, if you happen to get caught shoplifting a bunch of candy bars one time only, it really isn't worth prosecuting. They'll note you were arrested but that's it.

Of course you get arrested and of course you receive punishment. Prosecution means legal proceedings in a court of law. Not automatically prosecuting misdemeanor crimes means they are going to do everything in their power to keep these petty cases out of the court system by offering pre-diversion options such as community service before anyone has to see a judge, hire an attorney, etc.

In your candy bar example, in another city, you get arrested, you get an attorney, attorney meets with the prosecutor to determine if a deal can be made, whether a deal is reached or not you end up in front of a judge who signs off on the deal or you go to trial. 99% of the time in this hypothetical, no one is going to jail and yet there are SO many steps involved. Each of those steps costing money and time. This DA recognizes the amount of time and money spent on the charade and says her office will handle it unilaterally by simply offering deals directly to the criminals without a judge, defense attorney, potential trial, etc.

Streamlining.

It doesn't work. Property crime will explode and people will hate her in a year.

Yeah Guava! That’s what happened in Juneau, and Juneau is basically the exact same city as Boston! So the results MUST be the same!

If I only do it once a month at a different location each time, does that make it better?

Happened in Seattle

I'm all for looking the other way for drug crimes but you'll have networks of petty crooks take over your city stealing everything they can get their hands on

It happens everywhere you allow people to steal with little or no resistance.

But good luck! I'm sure Boston is sooo different.

I tend to agree with you on the property crimes but I can't say I've read specifics about her plans outside of this article. I can only imagine they are going to be tracking a lot of advanced statistics and will make adjustments to the plan as needed.

Could work. May not work. I applaud her effort at trying to save taxpayer money and keeping petty criminals out of expensive and overcrowded jails. Also, and I know it'll be a VERY unpopular opinion on this board, but this may also save some young people from having their lives screwed up by one stupid decision.....no reason a kid from a dirt poor household who is hungry should have a permanent mark on his record, and possible jail time, for stealing some food. He should be punished, but let's do so in a pragmatic manner.

The SJC has ruled in favor of leniency in issues of trespass by homeless people for years and property crimes have not "exploded."

If this happens, I’ll be the first to say I was wrong.

But I’m happy to see that the city is working to reduce mass incarceration and initiate prison reform.

Oh, that will happen but many that need to be there will be on the street.

I'm all for decriminalizing drugs. That would go further than slapping the hand of crooks

There's also the whole recidivism issue, the decreased burden on defense attorneys for indigent offenders (like the ones who usually shoplift), etc.

It's something akin to "fiscal responsibility."

In some areas I agree. I support prison reform but not for property crimes. Learned the hard way.

Trespassing?!?! Some some cocksucker can come on my property and hang out with impunity?

This is like going back to the wild, Wild West.

Guava, let’s just accept it. Boston will soon be rampant with people just taking what they want and then wagging their dicks in front of the police. And the police will have no recourse other than to ask them politely not to do it again.

That is the world we will live in from now on, according to the OT.

What exactly do you think is going to happen??? Is Boston really different from West Coast cities that are fighting this stuff?

More polite criminals? People all too wealthy to steal? No organized crime?

As a libertarian Ive gotta say I’m intrigued. I mean she’s coming at it from a completely different angle but still... let’s not dismiss the idea because of the source.
