It's "bouree", not "booray".

Bourrée was popular amongst people who worked on the River in the '80s & '90s.

Pretty popular on the pipeline, as well.

My dad said he used to play it all the time

Just read up on it

I don't understand the "cinch" thing

EDIT: Oh I see the trump suit stays the same for all 5 hands (tricks), it doesn't change after each trick.... nevermind

But it sounds like Hearts to me

It is basically the same as spades or hearts but the dealer turns over his last card and that suit is the Trump

ETA
It was banned offshore and on the crew boats because guys were losing too much money and it became an HR problem

I played some in a bar years ago. I was up big then Bouree 6 times in a row. I said frick it and never played there again. They all split the pot when I walked away. Cheating mother frickers. I could understand 2 times in a row but 6? They got me good.

Haven't played in years

5 cards, Dealer's last card is dealt face up and sets the Trump. Discard all non-trump cards except maybe the Ace of another suit...
Draw back to 5 cards.

Who plays first? Person to right of the dealer?

Highest trump wins the trick

Have to win 3 tricks to win the pot...

Get blurry from there...

If off is played and you have one, you have to play it?

If you don't, can you play anything or do you have to play Trump?

Bourre is not winning any tricks or isn't there other ways to boo?

If no one wins the most tricks (2-2-1 split), the pot carries

What else am I forgetting?

Yes you have to play what put down and beat it, if no offhand trump must be played

Bourree is not winning any tricks yes

Yes pot carries

Nothing. Its a simple game

Sounds like you should've passed, at least once in those 6 times. If you won big but then lost 6 times in a row, you just got greedy when you should've played tighter (or you didn't know what you're doing). I learned the game as a kid, it's not very difficult to understand the minimum cards to decide pass/play, not even considering strategy of sequencing once you're in the game.

Of course, my grandmother and great uncle (her brother) were the best and could squeeze out a "2 trick winner" with ease, so maybe I'm biased. My great uncle paid his children's Catholic school tuition playing bourre while at McDermott. We have a standing Tuesday night game at my great aunt's house with 6-8 family/neighbors.

Left of dealer. All card games go left.

Not greedy. Just playing for fun. I probably should have passed on a couple hands but even with good trumps, i couldnt get a trick. It was mind boggling to me at the time after 3 straight. At 6 I was like something odd is going on.
