The political party certainly doesn't match up but the man is clearly not mentally stable. He may have registered as Democrat many moons ago and never officially changes his party even though his views clearly did change. Or maybe it isn't even about political views. Maybe he just gets obsessed with people and became obsessed with Trump for some reason and felt he was helping him? You can't really rationalize crazy.
