I read Grand Canyon as Grand Cayman and was expecting a scuba diving death.

Hiking alone is a lot of fun. Getting lost alone in the wilderness is not. It's so easy to panic.

I often times wonder how I'd fare. Probably would die, but still, it would be interesting.

There are certain things you should not do alone.

Scuba diving, mountain climbing, and hiking the Grand Canyon to name a few.

There are clear situations where solo scuba diving is safer than with a buddy...that said, I don't think it translates to solo hiking.

She was reported missing April 3. Not to have been found after this long she must have gone off-trail.

She was a classmate of my youngest son in the engineering department at NSU. Her father is also one of the main professors in that department. She was also a 4.0 student and - if my memory serves - an only child. Just awful...

It's likely she fell to her death. From the AZ news link

quote:

The body of a woman who had been reported missing almost four months ago was found Saturday in the Grand Canyon near Pima Point, officials said.

Pima Point is a lookout point on the western end of the park, away from the maintained trails into the canyon.

I was thinking she might have fell too, but nobody is saying that. If she fell from Pima Point, it would be obvious, just by looking at her body that she died from falling.

There is a hiking trail (Hermit Trail) that runs north west of Pima Point. If she went down that trail without being prepared then she made a huge mistake.

I think she planned to go hiking but didn't tell her parents about it. Plus she didn't know what she was getting into. Nobody should go on that trail alone, particularly a first timer. The first source of water is like 9 miles down! And then you have to filter it.

To be honest, this all seems fishy as frick.

People just don't wander down Hermit trail. You just don't suddenly find yourself there. You got to make an effort to get their.

There's a story on a plaque, I believe near the south rim, that tells the story of a runner who has just completed the Boston Marathon. To celebrate, they went to hike the Grand Canyon. Despite being warned to stay hydrated, they thought because they were in "good shape" they could just carry a little water and be fine...RIP !

Highly possible. I didn't even realize there was an unmaintained trail out there.

shite, look at a Google maps satellite view of the canyon and you'll realize how it would be damn near impossible to maintain all the trails.

Unfortunately, this looks like a case of a young woman going hiking with a lack of experience and supplies and getting lost and dying from exposure or dehydration.

I agree. I didn't intend to mean to say "unmaintained" in a negative light. I realized that all of the National Parks have both official maintained and unmaintained trails.
