I think the cost/benefit strongly favors the pool. You can always rent a boat for the occasional outing/getaway. Most boats sit. I know some cats (typically fishermen) get multiple uses out of the boat per season - or even nearly year round use. But, pleasure boaters fall in love with the idea of having a boat, and it typically sits and rots - providing no benefit, but generating expenses and maintenance whether you use it or not.
On the other hand, a swimming pool becomes the centerpiece of your backyard barbeques, family get togethers - just your whole summer lifestyle - especially if you enjoy being in/around a pool.
Just my $0.02.
(Now, if you're the type who is ready to go every Friday/Saturday and will have the boat in the water 15 to 20 times a summer, this analysis may even out - I mean, I'm a homebody, but some folks like to get away from the house on the weekends...)

exactly. taking a boat out is a HUGE hassle.
a pool..i just scream at my kids to GO OUTSIDE and they're in the pool in 5 minutes having fun.

Agreed. It's hard to break out the added energy costs of a pool, but maintenance costs for salt and chemicals is easily under $50/month. We do everything ourselves (cleaning, figuring out the chemical, etc.). If you pay a pool company to do that, I imagine you'd get closer to $200/month for a pool. Still way cheaper than a boat.

No shite. I guess they have no clue what a new lower unit cost. Or a new prop, Or how much it cost to repair trolling motors. Updating electronics, Replacing Batteries. I have 6 huge batteries in my boat.

I think the bigger question is whether you personally will use the boat or pool more.
I've had two houses with pools that hardly ever got used.
Our current house has a boat slip. I get out on that boat as often as I can. Being out on the water hooked me like a drug.

On top of my boat I'm also a partner with some buddies in a floating camp. That fricking thing is more of a money pit than my damn pool and boat combined.
