I like the looks. Anyone driven one? I’m not bowled over by the 700 series.

Don't plan on keeping big BMWs long, bad resale and horrible shop costs.

Not really....they are in line with any other German auto.

7-series have bad resale value, same with CL-class Mercedes, Porshe SUV's, and other luxury vehicles in that segment. Anyone looking to buy one and comfortable with the expense are buying them new with the options they want, not looking to save money with options somebody else chose. 740's/750's are amongst the worst which is why they show up in the hood within 10 years from new.

what about the 5 series? Reliable? Good resale?

KBB shows a 5 year cost to own of 70k for the 5 series and 90k for the 7 series. I also noticed that the 7 series gets mediocre consumer reviews while the 5 gets great reviews.
The 6 series gets stellar reviews with an 85k cost to own.
So the 7 is out of contention. I guess it comes down to whether a difference of 15k on the 5 year cost to own is worth it to have something a little different, the 6 over the 5.

3 and 5 series do better as long as they don't have the "M" badge.

I've rarely seen a 6 not driven by a cougar. They seem to like those and Jags around here...

The issue I have with the 6 series as will as most of the cars in the niche is they are so darn heavy and they drive like they are unless you get a M or AMG.
My choice for that niche would be a Panamera and if you are very judicious with the options the cost to own could be less than the BMW over 5 years.
As a note, I will always lean toward the best drivers car in a segment which may not be your primary criteria. Also I have NOT driven the new 2018 chassis. Are you looking at the coupe or Gran Coupe?
