That's it. The Japs finally blew my mind. I'm trying to mentally add up all the bluefins I've caught. I think I could buy my own island.

One of the world’s most expensive fish just got pricier.

A 278-kilogram bluefin tuna sold for 333.6 million yen ($3.1 million) at a Tokyo fish market Saturday. The record price -- which equates to about $5,000 a pound -- is more than double the previous high set in 2013, according to Masayuki Fukuda, an official in charge of trading operations at the Tokyo market.

The record-topping fish was caught off Oma in northern Japan. It was sold on the first day of auction sales for 2019 at a center close to Tokyo Bay that opened in October following the relocation of the city’s main fish market in Tsukiji, near the upscale shopping area of Ginza.

Kiyomura Corp., which runs the Sushizanmai restaurant chain across Japan, made the winning bid, the Nikkei newspaper reported. The high-priced tuna will be served at regular prices at a Sushizanmai outlet in Tsukiji later on Saturday, the report said, estimating that the fish may cost an average of more than $200 per serving.

What makes a bluefin worth that much? Also, how will any restaurant actually make money off of it at $5,000/pound?

It’s a dick measuring thing in Japan to see who can blow the most money on chicken of the sea.

How many bluefin have you caught, very rare around here

Very overpriced but the first bluefin of the year is a pretty special thing in Japan, a lot of bragging rights and tradition along with too much sake at the auction, and the restaurant s sel it by the slice, just a few grams each

They auction the largest and best fish of the first catch of the new year as tradition. It’s just a once a year thing .

Yes. The fish is not worth that much and the rest of the year they go for regular prices for the most part.

My family actually used to ship bluefin to Japan in the 80’s and 90’s. They were in the fish business and sold tuna all around the US.

Scarcity is going to drive demand and prices in the coming years. Records will regularly be broken.

Publicity for the company.

Give customers more mental permission to fork out $200 for sushi plate across the board. Justification for high prices.

Between Florida and Hawaii, probably about 10,000 lbs. shite, we went on at least one charter in FL per year for the first 30 years of my life, though I haven't been out since 2012.

Pretty common to Jap tuna buyers at big tournaments over here. They listen to radio chatter, if a big tuna is coming in they show up at the dock, take a core sample, make an offer and pay cash on the spot.

It's a tradition in Japan that the first bluefin Tuna of the year goes for some ridiculous price

It's usually a marketing ploy for the restaurant that buys it

There are certain cuts that are very expensive in restaurants

I had bluefin once when the restaurant I worked for got some in. Don't get me wrong, it's much better than yellowfin but I definitely would not pay top dollar for it.

You're saying you have caught about 10,000 pounds of bluefin tuna?

Even if your charter has an HMS (Highly Migratory Species) Permit, that does not allow the commercial sale or transfer of any species taken under that permit.
