Bloomberg Sources: California Considers Paying Valero to Continue Operating Refinery

--California lawmakers are weighing a deal with Valero Energy, under which the state would pay the oil refiner hundreds of millions of dollars to prevent the closure of a San Francisco-area fuel plant, Bloomberg reported, citing people familiar with the matter.
--Between $80 million and $200 million of state funds could be earmarked for refinery maintenance costs, allowing Valero to continue operating its Benicia refinery, which is currently slated to close by April, the people said, according to the report.
--Legislators discussed the deal as recently as this past weekend and have until late Tuesday to submit bills for consideration, absent a deadline extension, according to Bloomberg.
--Valero didn't respond to requests for comment, and neither California Governor Gavin Newsom's office nor representatives for state senate and assembly leaders responded to inquiries left outside of normal business hours, Bloomberg reported.

So the politicians, including the Governor, pass a bunch of laws to hamstring refineries. They run to the media demonizing the oil & gas industry accusing them of price gouging California, despite all the taxes attached to gasoline sales in CA.
Now after refineries start closing and companies leaving California, the politicians are talking about forking over tens to hundreds of millions of dollars to refiners stop the bleeding.
What a bunch of maroons.

10 seconds after Valero agrees, they will find a way to cancel these payments.

Predictable.
I guess a win win.

Well, that will start a trend that will cost taxpayers more and more money than we already pay.

It could.
Seems idiotic policy that was avoidable simply by not being typical economic illiterate CA politicians.

If we could just find a way to get the uninsured off the roads that would be nice.
Would I rather pay a bit more in fuel if it meant others couldn’t drive which means they didn’t have insurance to begin with.
That is the question I’m asking myself lol.

Valero should tell the legislature that payback is a bitch, buh bye.
Then wait for the offer to at least triple.

Aren't they already in debt billions of dollars? Taxes in Cali are going to have to go up again. How can people not see that their taxes primarily pay for their state government's bad decision making?

They think that the funds will be made up once the “rich pay their fair share.”

Valero better take monies upfront. Newsome won't be governor much longer and the next liberal one won't honor any promises.

Hell no, Valero should tell them to eat shite and make these fools suffer due to their own poor decisions.

Tell California, payment up front bitch.

If I were Valero I would ignore that state govt. and disassemble that refinery and ship the parts to Texas.
Then sell the land and not pay the taxes on the sale.

To be fair, this is case in basically every government in existence

Can anyone please explain to me how these politicians get elected in California? The politicians do everything possible to force these companies to leave the state, only to turn around and throw millions of tax dollars at them to stay. Is the purpose to just create a problem to give them a reason to move tax dollars around? We all know there is plenty being skimmed off the top on that money. Probably going right into Newsom’s pocket.

If there’s a major refining company that would do this, it’s Valero. They’ve done some petty (or awesome, depending how you look at it) shite before. Including blacklisting industry-leading manufacturers over “carbon neutral” pledges.
Valero doesn’t give two shits about appeasing folks who are ideologically opposed to their existence as a company.
