Do these groups realize that the capitol building in Washington DC is full of statues of people associated with the Confederacy? These include:

Robert E. Lee
Zebulon Vance
Alexander Hamilton Stephens
And of course, Jefferson Davis

Why do we want to eliminate historical figures who believed and practiced what was largely acceptable in their time? Yes, they were flawed people but they have a place in history and we should not seek to forget about our past, warts and all. If we get rid of statues/monuments to every figure in American history who held views about race, sexual preference and/or gender which differs from our modern perspective, who would be left?

Lincoln fought the Civil War to keep from being known as the president that was in office when the Union split. He only freed slaves to remove them from the nation as he did not want to live with them.

I always find it fascinating when people think the emancipation proclamation did anything.

Not directed solely at you, but all the EP did was free the states held in hostile territory (as if Confederate slaveholders would listen to a Union executive order ).

Not to mention slaves held in union states weren't freed until the 13th amendment AFTER the civil war, after Lincoln was assassinated.

So neither slaves in the south, or the north benefitted from Lincoln's EP.

I'm sure we all know the statue is not going to come down this weekend. But this group and others like it will keep pushing until the p*ssies in charge eventually bow to their demands. They'll probably want to make it Oprah square or something to appease the black people. It really sickens me how we've gotten to this point.. where the vocal minority runs the show.

They have gates at every entrance but they are about bellybutton high. It is still a barrier, though. If they close the park, and people jump the fence, it is trespassing and they should be arrested.

The main protest, organized by Take 'Em Down NOLA, is scheduled to start about 1 p.m. in Congo Square before moving to Jackson Square. Organizers of the group have said they will try to pull down the statue of Jackson with ropes.

Members of various groups who have opposed efforts to remove Confederate monuments in the city have said they plan to show up. In addition, David Duke, the white supremacist and Republican candidate for U.S. Senate from Mandeville, urged listeners on his radio show to counter the protesters on Friday. Duke himself pledged to show up on Saturday unless he has assurances the police will protect the statue.
