Bill Gates: Why I’m investing $1 billion into clean energy

Last month, during a trip to Europe, I mentioned that I plan to invest $1 billion in clean energy technology over the next five years. This will be a fairly big increase over the investments I am already making, and I am doing it because I believe that the next half-decade will bring many breakthroughs that will help solve climate change. As I argued in this 2010 TED talk, we need to be able to power all sectors of the economy with sources that do not emit any carbon dioxide.
quote:Interesting read
Scientists generally agree that preventing the worst effects of climate change requires limiting the temperature increase to 2º C, and that doing so requires the biggest emitters to cut emissions 80% by 2050 and all countries to essentially eliminate them by the end of the century. Unfortunately, while we can make progress with today’s tools, they cannot get us to an 80% reduction, much less 100%. To work at scale, current wind and solar technologies need backup energy sources—which means fossil fuels—for windless days, long periods of cloudy weather, and nighttime. They also require much more space; for example, to provide as much power as a coal-fired plant, a wind farm needs more than 10 times as much land.

Is there proof of climate change?

Kudos to Bill. It's his money.

Great. Everyone here should be fine with him investing his own money.

his OS, and the systems they run on, have produced so much more than $1B of climate damage

What a stupid liberal! I bet he's black and receives "free" money and housing from Obama!

I'm sure he inherited his fortune like every other billionaire. He's probably just feeling guilty about all the damage done by his slave-trading, bison-killing ancestors.

Once it develops, he'll make billions more.
Especially when the liberal politicians who owe him for his campaign contributions push BS legislation in favor of "clean" energy.

I am in the energy business, and every thing is going in the clean direction. Start investing in these companies.

Bill Gates has been incredibly charitable. He's donated more than $30 billion
He's also only giving a small portion (for him) to his kids
quote:
“I don’t think that amount of money would be good for them. They have to find their own way. They will be given an unbelievable education and that will all be paid for. And certainly anything related to health issues we will take care of. But in terms of their income, they will have to pick a job they like and go to work,” Gates said.

No. It's called weather.

Don't eat the cheese.
Do you homework and study the climate history of the earth. Years of heating and cooling.

Don't tell that to all the far right wing bomb throwers on the poli board - they'll insist that Gates is "naive" and a "liberal puppet"
Then SFP the expert on every fricking thing known to man will pipe in about how Germany is "floundering" with their new energy initiatives. We literally just had this same debate at 7am - glad Billy boy has got my back.
