Big Pharma uses old drug to treat rare disorder, w/ $89k price tag

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration on Thursday approved a drug made by Marathon Pharmaceuticals to treat Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD), a devastating muscle-wasting disease that mainly affects young boys.
The drug, Emflaza, known generically as deflazacort, belongs to a class of anti-inflammatory drugs known as corticosteroids that are frequently used to treat DMD and other conditions.
Emflaza is the first steroid to win formal FDA approval to treat DMD. Prednisone, another steroid, is frequently prescribed for the disease though it does not have official FDA approval. Emflaza is thought to have fewer side effects than Prednisone.
Deflazacort has been available outside the United States for decades.
Great, right?
Not so fast my friend

The big issue facing closely held Marathon will be how to price the drug. Marathon did not invent deflazacort and patients have been able to import it inexpensively for personal use for years because there was not an approved U.S. treatment.
That will now change. Patients will no longer be allowed to import the drug now that an FDA-approved product is available. Northbrook, Illinois-based Marathon said the drug will carry a list price of $89,000 a year but that the company will provide a "robust" assistance program for patients who are not covered by insurance.
Yay free market. <---Sarcasm, for the unsure

That's 70 times the price overseas

Not when you're forced to have insurance. This is how ins prices are inflated.

I am all for capitalism and a free market.
But my libertarianism gets tested with Pharma

If anyone thinks this is the definition of a free market, they are incapable of having a rational discussion as to the real problem at hand here.
Edited to acknowledge OPs sarcasm

Restricting imports and forcing a govt regulated monopoly is the exact opposite of a free market.

in what world is restricting the sell of available drugs free market?

It's neither free market or capitalism when the Gov't relegates who and where a patient is able to get medicine from. People who blame the rising cost of medicine on the business without acknowledging the compliance of our greased palms government just don't get it. We need overhauls in government overreach, "free market and capitalism" responses completely overlook how the FDA has failed the patient in many instances.

Anyone with half a brain knows this is crony capitalism, rent seeking, anti-capitalistic behavior.

I feel like a lot of people are missing the sarcasm here today.
There's nothing free about that market. It is a great deal for the company's shareholders, and a terrible one for the poor souls who have to pay for a marginally better product.

I think you are missing my point, and possibly others. Yes, Pharma isnt in a free market.
However, even if it was, it could still sell certain drugs for astronomical amounts. And with that, I would still be in a state of inner turmoil on how I feel about that.

This crap has to stop. It isn't capitalism that every other country on the planet can tell big pharma to kiss their arse so we end up subsidizing the whole planet.
If Trump does only 1 more thing for his whole term, I hope it is to badger Republicans to attack big pharma and end US subsidization of the rest of the planet.
Charge us the same price or you can't sell in the US.

Unfortunately the FDA isn't the one who stipulates that other drugs can't be imported for cheaper. That's our Congress. Another great example is why Medicare/Medicaid doesn't negotiate for drug prices- too much $$ would be lost and the pharma lobby is way more powerful than voters are.
Either way it's cronyism at it's finest.

And yet people blame Obamacare for their skyrocketing premiums
Healthcare providers and big pharma fixing prices are the true cost multiplier

Pharma is only 10% of health care expenditures. Here's a chart I found on Aetna's web site:

According to the 2015 data you can find below at cms.gov, the proportions of the big three haven't changed through 2015:
