Big increase in Air-med flights to hospitals?

I live near a hospital here in Acadiana, and I've noticed a sharp increase in air-med helicopters bringing people to the hospital in the past few months. It's like quadrupled what it normally is, so I'm wondering if these are COVID-related calls where the symptoms have gotten so bad so quickly that helicopter is your only option at that point??

More likely traumas if its a trauma center

Aren't a few hospitals south of there out of service because of the hurricane? Would imagine response time has been lengthened which could necessitate using a helicopter in to transport them faster.

COVID is killing literally everyone. and if we fly then in helicopters, it minimizes contact with other cars. And some people don’t wear masks in cars. So it’s really a smart move by the government

Since Ida, there have been plenty of air transports due to hospital and long-term care facilities closing and having to move patients.
When the hospitals were booked solid, moving acute patients was more complex, so yes, COVID-related issues hasn't hurt their number either.

Cosmo what kind of physician are you? You're always very quick to respond to medical questions on the OT so I'm thinking you have constant access to a computer not in a clinical area. Radiologist?

Have we circled back to the beginning when COVID was making Chinese people fall over on the spot and bleed for their eyes. I remember that

Ok, wasn't thinking of some of these possibilities. I will say that the traffic increase started before Hurricane Ida, but hospital closures may be contributing since then as well. Regardless of the reason, at costs of $20,000+ for each ride I can imagine Acadian Airmed is smiling from ear to ear.....

This will be an unpopular opinion, but Acadian is probably running more because of what they can charge on air services. I've seent it firsthand many times.

Hospitals are full. Patients are having to be sent from further away. I have two patients who were flown from hospitals in south WV to Morgantown because we were the closet hospital with bed space.

Close but not quite

People have been mentioning the same thing here in South Carolina. Noticeable uptick in med flights. For instance, they airlifted Alex Murdaugh after whatever went down when he was allegedly shot at. Not a scratch on him.

They will airlift traumas for just a broken arm or leg.
I assume it is fraud of some sort

All I know is they charged $42K to fly my wife to NOLA from Lafayette.
PS - It was worth it!!!
ETA- BCBS settled for $17K

That, the drones chasing people, and welding people's apartment doors shut.
The trailer for this real life movie was so much more entertaining.

I don't think people with Covid is getting air-meded.
Maybe I am wrong, but I can't imagine someone calling the ambulance and they go out to the house and then decide that person has Covid so bad only air-med can save them.

Man, would you shite an egg roll if you found out it was severe reactions to the vaccine and they had to life flight them to save them?

I imagine it's all about money baw. A couple of years ago, a man got snake bit in Philadelphia, MS, they airlifted him to UMC in Jxn. It's 75 miles to UMC, by the time they generated the mission from Jxn, picked up the patient and flew him back to Jxn, an ambulance could have probably driven it twice.
