Can someone expound on this as to how it could affect the chemical plants and refineries down here?

I don't know exactly why, but there are always issues with sustained deep cold with the plants in the area

just remember... 1 of the factors that caused the Challenger disaster was a major cold snap at the Cape

Why are the predicted temps in this thread so much lower than what’s shown on my wunderground app?

b/c the numbers in this thread are from different model runs

it's from a number of models (and other factors) that the forecasted highs/lows (aka what's on your wunderground app) come from

as I said earlier in the thread... from 1 model does not a forecast make

and as others have said... the models have been so spread out that more forecasters are going back to usual climate norms until the models come closer together

The problem when the temp gets to about 25F for about 4-6 hours, field transmitters start failing which in turn gives false reading in the control rooms. Yes, it would be best to just shut down units, but that cost way to much and plants will take their chance. This is when all hands and even extra people are out there. Nothing like standing out in the cold all night with a radio. Been there and done that.

I'd settle for the American model to be correct but honestly, call me crazy, but I really want the Canadian to be correct. I've never experienced single digit temps so for once, I'd like to see just how painful that kind of cold is.

Being a Louisiana baw myself, I had never experienced anything colder than 27-28° until we went and stayed with my wife's sister in Denver last December. Happened to catch the coldest recorded December temperature at the Denver Airport -16°

I honestly think it's comparable to like 20° in the deep south, but it was funny feeling my beard get icy in a matter of minutes.

Sitting in aluminum snow soaked bleachers for the Broncos game in single digits that Sunday was a different story. I imagine that's what sitting inside an igloo feels like, it was some kind of cold. 9° at kickoff.

More specifically, a lot of contractors don’t pay attention to elastomer specs. They see 1/4” ball valve and go grab the cheapest one they can find. Most valves come standard with PTFE which has a low temp rating of 50deg. The Exxon spec was changed after the explosion to specify elastomers that are rated to -65deg. Overkill but it works.

And there's another "can't do wrong operator" blaming the contractors that are only following the engineers shitty specs.
"He didn't use a part that's 3 times more expensive just because"

It got in the single digits 3 years ago. Jan 2014 I remember making a hunt when it was 8 degrees. Stayed frozen for 3 days around here with sleet and ice

I'm assuming he's referring to that New Years. It was cold as shite and windy out the north. Think it was 18 or so around my parts.

It got down to the high teens a few years ago.

Igloos are warmer than the outside elements. That's why they are built.
