Even for pickups? Hate to see what they will be like when this takes effect.

Couple the cost of a 40 mpg vehicle with the cost of gasoline which may be 8 bucks a gallon by then and our country will look very different.

Cars have gotten bigger, heavier, and more powerful, while fuel economy has stayed roughly the same. A modern Honda Accord gets about the same MPG as a 1988 Accord

The heavier can be blamed on the ever increasing crash standards. You can't build something like a 90's CRX that weighs 2000 pounds today. At least not at a price anyone will buy it at.

Looks like my 2012 mazda will just be getting a new engine once she turns 300k. Will be much cheaper than buying anything new.

When Obama did this it was an average across the entire fleet per manufacturer. They fudge the numbers to meet our current regulations though. But they can still sell vehicles that get 15 mpg

It is fleetwide average not every single car, this article is false. It is funny though because it is the perfect scam for the auto manufacturers. They will throw in hybrids, electric cars, and small cars to their fleet to get the average and even in some cases sale a specific make at a loss to be able to sale the vehicles people want to buy. They get the PR and it is funny when a guy who buys a hybrid thinks he is saving the planet. His purchase just allowed more trucks and SUVs to be sold. It is really bullshite and a scam.

These rules are why your vehicle does nonsensical things, like turn off at stoplights.

These guys are fricking idiots. Or they just want normal cars to go extinct in favor of electric.

What’s not normal about an electric car? It has four wheels and gets you from point A to B yeah?

I think Buttigeigs remarks are pretty stupid though. Transportation is the second highest cost for Americans so let’s make the price go up? Brilliant. And yeah there will be baws ready to sign a 15 year loan for those $150,000 trucks no doubt

So stupid. Hundreds of millions of dollars have already been spent on designs and testing and ramping up of supply chains for 2025,2026 and 2027 new car designs.

Are they so clueless to not know the design cycle of an automobile is approximately 4 years to production? Are they expecting car manufacturers to just chunk the investments in engineering they've already made and start over?

This is a perfect example of liberal detachment from reality that makes me hate every MFer that votes for them. No sane person would consider putting their name on something so ridiculously unachievable. Especially under current inflationary conditions. Hope they all die in a firey plane crash.

Transportation is the second-largest cost for American families

If this is true, it is not a result of fuel efficiency and gas costs. It is a result of adding car cost into “Transportation”. These cars will cost people more. Additionally, I find it hard to believe most Americans spend more on “Transportation” then they would if you divided other things into categories like child care, utilities, health care, etc.
