It's not that they are riding a bike. It's that they are riding a bike on a major highway in the city with heavy vehicle traffic

So it's the cyclist' fault that BR has basically ZERO bike lanes?

Just because you can do something (ride a bike on a busy road, instead of a sidewalk) doesnt mean you should.

100% the cyclist fault for not using better judgement. Just because you can ride a 15lb bicycle along the roadways with 18 wheelers and cars doesnt mean its a smart thing to do.
BUT HOT DAMN, IT`S MY RIGHT TO DO IT.

.
.well, now look at ya.
.
.
Its my right to walk down the street in a at midnight in a highly publicized dangerous neighborhood. BUT DAMN IT, ITS MY RIGHT TO WALK ON PUBLIC STREETS....Let us know how it turns out for ya.

A good analogy:
Go get a mortgage for a house. Its very likely that they are willing to loan you more than what you need....doesnt mean that you should leverage yourself to the max - does it???

In New Orleans and other cities, it is quite common to see adults riding their bicycles on the sidewalks. However, it is not legal. There are often ordinances that limit the use of sidewalks to pedestrians. Sometimes, small children are allowed to ride their bikes on the sidewalk.

quote:

Local City and Parish Ordinances
In Baton Rouge, there is no exception for small children:
Sec. 11:230. - Riding on sidewalks.

(a) No person shall ride a bicycle upon a sidewalk within a business district.

(b) The chief of police is authorized to erect signs on any sidewalk or roadway prohibiting the riding of bicycles thereon by any person and when such signs are in place no person shall disobey the same.

(c) Whenever any person rides a bicycle upon a sidewalk, such person shall yield the right-of-way to any pedestrian and shall give audible signals before overtaking and passing such pedestrian.

(City Code 1951, Title 11, § 230)

Not sure if homie was in a business district, but from the way the code is written, it sure seems like they don't want bicycles on sidewalks.

Hate it for yall, but bikes have every right to be on the road, and in most instances are required to be there. Hitting a cyclist does nothing but prompt me to ride in the middle of the lane to leave no doubt that people in motor vehicles see me.

Navigating the issue of bicycles on Louisiana roads to some of the OT is like trying to hold a lucid conversation with a Libertarian about politics.

Does a Louisiana citizen have a right to use city, parish, or state roads where bicycles are not strictly forbidden?

Of course.

Should you exercise that right on Jefferson Highway at 5:00 pm on a weekday?

No. That’s foolish.

Sorry somebody got hurt or worse.

No kidding. If you see a nest full of red wasps on your patio, and it's within easy reach, would you grab it with your bare hands to crush it because you can reach it?
I cycle too, but damn if you would catch me trying to ride on a busy assed street.
frick that nonsense. Every time one of them gets killed by a car they start whining about their rights.
The graveyard is full of people who were in the right. God gave you a brain, people. Use it.

It seems that many of you are under the impression that cyclists get on the road just to piss other people off, which is not the case in most instances. I don't know about this guy specifically, but I wear cycling shorts to ride because my seat makes my arse hurt. I wear compression shirts and socks because they are comfortable. I probably look like I'm in a racing suit or some shite, but really I'm just trying to get where I am going. If that means I need to ride on a busy road at 5PM, that's where I'm going. My mode of transportation is no less valid than anyone else's, and that doesn't give anyone the right to run someone off the road. Like I said before, when I have a close call with a motorist, it just prompts me to ride more and more in the middle of the road for my own safety.

with that logic, as a US Citizen, I have the right to walk my dog at 2AM through some of Compton's undesirable neighborhoods. Dont mean its a good idea, huh?
"But damn it, it my fricking right"

But if it was illegal to do it, would you still do it?

If it was illegal to ride a bike on the same lanes that cars, trucks, 18 wheelers drive on, would you do it?

Heres another analogy:
If all drugs were legal - would you start shooting heroin? Its fricking legal. Its your right to do with your body what you please.
Its your body.

Ultimately that is the key. Barring any unexpected problem, I will reach 400,000 lifetime miles on a road bike next year. Outside banging and beating around with cars, cabs, trucks and pedestrians during the 2 summers I was a messenger in NYC I have never come in contact with a car. They do what they are supposed to do and I do what I am supposed to do along with trying to predict what dumb stuff they are about to do.

In the end, cycling is one of my safer hobbies though that could change on my ride I will start in a few minutes. I will say of all the states that I ride in LA is one with a higher percentage of near misses. Drivers just aren't used to bicycles and don't seem to know how to react to them.

Need to raise the taxes on helmets and cycling gear so they can pay for their own roads for safety.

Has anyone ever been giving a ticket for riding a bike on the sidewalk? What are the fines for it? Do you need a cycling license. What if you plead the 5th during the cycling stop and don't have an ID? Will the officer take you to jail and then steal your bike. So many questions. Maybe cyclists need to have their own special license to drive on the roads like every other form of vehicle.

Maybe that’s the only transportation they have to get to a job. Not everyone can afford cars.

Imagine the lives we could save if Baton Rouge only had a massively overfunded bus system with bike racks and stops every half mile on every major highway through the city.

You go exercise your rights. While you’re at it you need to pre-pay for your headstone that says “What I was doing was within my rights!”

Basically you’re a fool to ride a bike on a busy road. Half the people that are on the road are texting and drifting all over the lane. But you exercise your rights. Remember that as you are being loaded onto a stretcher and praying to God you make it to a hospital alive.
