You are a crook if you charge the market rate for you services?

I own some rental properties so I routine call them once or twice a year for minor issues I'm either out of town for or don't feel like doing. At least once a year I get an absurd bill.

I had a capacitor go out at my house while I was out of town and they tried to charge me $220. A service call is $80 and a capacitor is under 10 minutes of work including the time to diagnose and repair it. A new capacitor is $15-25.

I've never been grossly overcharged by an electrician or plumber. Maybe it's just my luck I dont know.

Eta: also, try and get some quotes for a new system and tell me some of the guys aren't worse then used car salesman. Maybe not crooks but damn near it trying to upsell you all kinds of crap you don't need.

hard to find a good male barber these days and $60 an hour isn't to shabby.

while true (wife is a stylist) you typically have to pay for your station at a salon and if you have an in-home salon (which the wife has) the appointments dont fill up a full 8 hours every day.

its great extra income for date nights, but she just does it for kicks.

and i fix my own washer & dryer but i think $220 for the guy coming out, figuring out WHAT the problem is, having the right capacitor handy to fix it on the spot is MORE than worth the $220 you were charged.

get over it if thats the best you can come up with. i wouldn't bat an eye at that price.

A lot of people go to college that probably shouldn't. It's an old paradigm that not going to college is a negative thing, provided the kid is motivated enough to learn and work on their own.

Another thing, most kids get advice from adults who base their opinions on what has happened, where kids need to optimize for 20 years down the road where who know wtf the world will look like. That's on display in this thread.

One trend that's an almost certainty, is the continued blending of the digital and physical world. The first thing he should do is get a job in any of the traditional blue collar industries that will not go away. Build up a network and experience. In the meantime, learn to program. Learning to program only needs an internet connection, a $100 laptop, and effort. Being in an industrial type field, PLC/arduino programming comes to mind first. But any programming will suffice.

The people who will never go out of demand in the next 30 years are the ones with skills in both the digital and physical realms.

Elevator mechanics. Similar to other MEP trades you get paid while going to school, and they make serious cash.

A good plumber or electrician that returns their calls and does the work when they say so for the price they say can make a small fortune.

A good friend of mine is a plumber--repairs only--and has three trucks. He pays his people very well and he makes a very good living---easily low to mid 6 figures.

They do my work and I never feel cheated. Recently I called him out because I had three faucets that were dripping and all three were different brands. He had every part on the truck and did in about 20 minutes. Charged $50 and I was very happy.

If you are talking about ocean going vessels you are not going to get a captains slot without a degree from a maritime academy, same requirement for becoming a river pilot.

Not necessarily true but it will surely make things a lot easier and a lot quicker. Hawspiping to a master unlimited license would not be fun

Plant operator?

This is not a trade. You cant get a certificate and walk down the street to the next place and sign up as an operator. That being said if you can be fortunate enough Plant Operator has a lot of advantages such as good pay, local work (home every day/night), regular schedule, and good benefits to raise a family on. These jobs tend to be industry specific and if your company goes belly up 30 yrs from now it could create a little bit of concern.

Instrument and Electrical work is probably the best trade to get into today. Hard to find these people now and need is increasing.

FWIW, I work in a chem plant in management.

You care to share your friends company name? A good honest plumber is always good information to have.
