Best program/video/class to learn the basics of photoshop or similar program?

The Mrs, neaux pix, is interested in some sort of photo editing (photoshop or similar) software that she can use to edit pictures and make Christmas/birthday cards and invitations, etc... I plan on giving this to her for Christmas (among other things 
) but want to make sure that there's a way she can learn how to use the program? If not, it will just be a wasted purchase used for nothing more than we can do in MS Paint. Any suggestions?

i'm curious about this, too
i kind of want to start expanding my pallate in all sorts of visual production, including this sort
i haven't looked into it, but i know linda.com is relatively well regarded (but you have to pay) for all sorts of stuff
youtube is usually my #1 go to for learning something new

lynda.com is a good source, especially for learning your way around design/editing software.

Lynda.com or creativelive.com if you want an online platform. I have actually bought a few classes from creativelive as well as watched some of their live streams and really like the content.
The community college route is solid also. The community college in my area offers digital media classes for like $79 a credit hour. I have considered taking some.
Really, the easiest way is to work on something your interested in and use youtube. Like anything, it's extremely dry and difficult to learn if you're not vested in the material you're trying to create. Would be like trying to learn coding if you have no desire/drive to build your own website.

I've always had the best luck buying a book on Photoshop or whatever program I'm trying to learn, and preferably one that come with examples for each section (either via a cd or downloaded from their site) that lets you follow along.
YouTube or other websites are great for an additional resource, but the layout and flow of books are usually much easier since they take you through the programs from start to finish and you aren't left searching for something that you might not even know what to search for and the big heavy ones are generally more comprehensive.
The $40 or so you pay (cheaper if bought used, but make sure the disk is included if there is one) is well worth the money imo. I don't recommend taking a class on it as they generally won't be nearly as comprehensive and will cost much more and take way more time.

Back on this, so when I go to photoshop's website, the only thing I can see for purchase is some sort of monthly subscription. I thought it would be a program you buy. Am I missing something or looking at the wrong thing?

YouTube has lots of good Info and the guys I used 7 or so years ago to learn aren't worth mentioning.. One of the most important things is to play around with the software and develop your owner methods.. When you are looking to do something specific that is outside your abilities..YouTube it

To the best of my knowledge, you can't "buy" Photoshop anymore.
It is a monthly subscription that includes all updates as long as you subscribe.
You can buy Lightroom or Elements.
