Ronnie at Lamar YMCA off Perkins is really good.
I’m sure you can get adequate lessons at Highland, City, Independence, or Forest Park if you’re remotely athletic and understand the simple physics of ball movement.

Wife and I took lessons before covid. brec offers beginner, intermediate and advanced lessons. Instructor was good and we had fun. It is also very cheap to rent a court for an hour or two. There are also several courts around town you can go to for free.

Don't know much about leagues but I know a couple people who participate and they say the community is very accepting of newcomers.

BREC has some great beginner groups. I recommend taking a few private lessons first just so you're not a complete novice when you start group lessons. That's certainly not required. I have no idea about the Y, so I can't help there.

Also, you're going to need to play a LOT of singles tennis to lose 10 pounds. Not trying to discourage you at all, but it's a pretty slow pace in the beginning. That being said, tennis is fun, and you'll progress quickly if you stick with it and have an ounce of athleticism. Good luck!

BREC. I’d think. We used to have a team made out of players from independence park, and we’d smoke people in 3.5 league back in the mid-late 2000s. There were only a few teams that could keep up. The pro at independence park at the time worked with the LSU girls team, and taught lessons on the side.

I've scored touchdown on intramurals and goals. But tennis seems like it's a challenge worth taking

BREC Highland. Give it a few years before you’re thinking tournaments. You’ll be a 3.0 for a while.

it's a grind to learn in the summer, and be quite brutal. I'd take lessons as starters.

Find a hitting partner who's at your level. Keep the ball in play as much as possible.

Buy you a used tennis machine if you really get into it.

Join a BREC league team. They have all levels.

LSUPride87 is the resident tennis expert. If not mistaken.

Most guys that really like it, play until they're old men...

Depends on who you play with and pace of play. If you are spending a ton of time between serves and games, not so much. But get a partner who is there to play and it is damn hard work.

FWIW, I got on a kick two years ago where I was going out to Perkins Road YMCA twice a week and hitting against the ball machine for 90 minutes a night. Had the machine set to shoot me 10-12 minutes of balls all over the court. Walk around and pick them up, grab a water and repeat. I lost a significant amount of weight doing that. Tennis can be good exercise. Mixed doubles with margaritas in a social league atmosphere? Not so much.

Corey Christian, assistant pro at Country Club of La. is one of the best in the city giving lessons & he does give private ones off site. Call the pro shop & either ask for him or leave a message...leave no reference.
