For some reason I always wanted to be in the Super Lawyers b/c I thought it was legit but then I find out it's just a FindLaw payment thing with the same validity of the $300/award offers I get mailed every year (plaque included!).

I don't know about that either. I'm retaining an attorney that's rated AV-Preeminent and she's about to get the boot.

I have deemed myself Best Super Lawyer in the state. Best at procrastinating and Super at putting shite off until later.

Both are meaningless. Anyone who is a sophisticated consumer of legal services ignores them.

It's similar to the old "Who's Who" in college. I delete no less than 3 "Congratulations! You've been named the best lawyer on planet earth" e-mails a week. Offering to print my name in the New York Times or elsewhere. I did get put on SuperLawyers one year and never talked to anybody and never paid anybody. But, it's the same thing. All of that stuff is pretty much garbage. If you want to know who is a good lawyer, ask a lawyer or a judge. Advertising used to be illegal, so your reputation was based on word of mouth...and was accurate. These days, you can proclaim yourself Atticus Finch on a billboard and nobody knows the difference. (It's especially problematic because many great lawyers are overlooked because they think advertising is distasteful.)

This is true.

It's true, but many consumers of legal services, who legitimately need legal services, are not sophisticated.

Also true. Hence the billboard I saw recently of a lawyer alongside his dog, both wearing dress shirts and ties.

Kind of a reach but I understand you’re desperate for anything so I’ll allow it

I believe the formula is

(Total Settlements/Total # of cases)*(0.75*Maritime Cases)*(0.67*Auto accident cases)*Workplace Incident multiplier=X.

If X is greater than 17.45 you're considered a Super Lawyer. If X is 16.08 to 17.44 you're a Best Lawyer. Anything less than 16.08 is just a lawyer.

I think the exchange rate is currently 1.575 Best Lawyers = 1 Super Lawyer. Approximately.

Seems that calculation favors settlement mills as opposed to lawyers that work.

I've been on Super Lawyer's website for about 10 years. I've never paid them for the listing or filled out an application, so I don't know how they went about adding my name. Looking at the list, not everyone there is so super. There are some very well known lawyers on there who likely don't know where the water fountains are at the courthouses.

Best Lawyers is a different animal. Their membership is voted on by other lawyers. I've been on the Best Lawyer's list for about 8 years and again, I didn't apply and don't know how I was nominated.

Between the two, the Best Lawyers list has the higher caliber lawyers on it in my opinion.
