To me it’s a ford, Chevy, dodge, etc debate. I have a generac that’s been good to me. I also have a close friend who had a brand new Cummins installed before hurricane season. It had less than 10 hours on it and completely let them down. Valves and internals were destroyed. Owner of the company that installed is replacing it with a new one and also stated that he has 7 other new Cummins that had same issue. Hopefully Cummins will work out the bugs. It all boils down to maintenance more than anything. Generac seems to be a household name and I believe the numbers in use are far greater than any other brand so it seems we here more about them. Good luck

Honda. We have a 9000 w Honda generator, 20 years old, fires up first pull everytime, and runs the entire house. Friend has a Generac. He regrets it he says.

I have the same. We got it a few weeks before Ida. So far, so good.

Which Generac did he get the air cooled or water cooled? Problems with air cooled yes but the water cooled is close to nil. Water cooled is more expensive though.

There have been several of these Generac threads last couple years.I was set to get me one but I investigated around the community, there are a lot of Generacs in Grant Parish. It seems like people that people that put them in 5plus years ago have had good luck with them,it’s the newer ones that fail in short order.I’ve posted this several times, someone always chimes in they’ve had theirs 8-10 years with no trouble. That is EXACTLY my point, the older one’s were reliable, the newer ones are trash.Guy up the road road had brand new one ,lasted 1 1/2 days.Someone else had theirs fail after 15 minutes.

Another issue I’ve read about is that people in subdivisions using natural gas,the people downstream don’t get enough gas flow to keep them running.

One guy Italked to had a older 22kw Generac on propane,it has been reliable but he burns $100 /day.Propane has gone up in price since I talked to him.

I would have had to had to get propane myself.
Based on all this I bought 2 Honda 7000 generators with a parallel kit.Expensive and I’ll have to deal with gasoline but I think I’ll have the most reliable set up possible. In the unlikely event one of the Hondas fail,I’ll still have another.

I’d be pissed out of my mind to put in a Generac like my neighbor and it failed in day and a half.He had to scramble around and buy a portable generator, run extension cords, etc. That’s exactly what I want to avoid.

Based on my conversation with the installer, I would NOT recommend a Generac. I would have to start my research over again since learning of the problems with the controller on newer models.

Before I learned of this, we bought a 27kW Generac for our business. It’s a liquid cooled model and I’m wondering if they are having the same issues as the newer air cooled models.

Sorry I can’t be of more help.

Same thing here. I have the older propane burner that works great. I also heard from people with natural gas models that flow can be an issue.

We couldn’t get propane because our supplier was not prepared for a situation where they had power outages themselves.

I wound up having to buy a gas burner portable and run cords for use during the day so we could conserve propane. We were running the 22kW only at night the last few days of Ida. Talk about a pain.

I also upgraded from a 250 gallon to a 500 gallon propane tank in December. That cost roughly $1,250 for the change out and fuel. This was after giving me a credit for the propane remaining in the 250.

From what I hear the liquid cooled Generacs are much more reliable. Our rural water system has one that runs on diesel,it broke down Hurricane Laura but it was pretty old and been through a lot of outages.
Before SWEPCO took over our electric system the power would go out every time the wind blew.

Well over 200,000 hours on it.

My math skills suck, but 200,000 hours / 24 hours in a day equals 8,333.333 days / 365 is 22.8 years. You've had it for 9 years but have ran it for 22.8 years straight. Story definitely checks out

Whichever one you get make sure uts liquid cooled and not named generac.

Air cooled don't last so long down here.

Cummins is prob the best

Yeah, I have a B&S that’s over 10yrs old and it rolled over 800hrs during Ida. I feel like we lose power more than most (couple hours at least once a month plus multiple day outages for every real weather event in Baton Rouge).

LG panels with gateway 2 backup interface and Tesla powerwall batteries

You won’t have a clue that your power from the electric grid shut off. Your clocks won’t even reset.

No maintenance to do everyday checking oil or any of that BD

I have a Cummings 20KW because people I know with enough money for price to not be a consideration all have Cummings. That being said any brand of whole house generator is still better than messing with getting gas cans filled , running extension cords , constantly explaining why we can’t run the coffee maker when the toaster is on. A whole house generator is worth every dollar.

Probably 2.75 a watt for the PV. So 27ish depending on the house and how big you want to go.

First PowerWall is 10k. Then 7k for each after that.

It’s more than a generator, but has an ROI and little to no O&M cost.
