Pappy's nice but there are others just as nice without the price
Colonel E.H. single barrel - from the same distiler and some think it's better than Pappy. If you can find it it is usually limited to one purchase at a time.

get him a William Larue Weller or a Old Forester Birthday Bourbon instead. if you want a rye, get him a Thomas Handy Sazerac.
I have had pappy from 10 to 23, while very good, not nearly worth the price you’ll pay. phenomenal bourbons and whiskeys can be had for far less.

Instead of overpaying for Pappy, get him a selection of moderately priced bourbons (several already mentioned here) so he has a range to try.

While I agree not the easiest to obtain like purchasing a bottle of makers off the shelf, much easier to obtain than the pappy.
