Border Collie - They require an owner who is committed because they are remarkable dogs. While they don't necessarily need a more active owner than other breeds, they will hold you accountable. They’re always in a good mood and affectionate. And basically a beast if you teach them to do anything.

The best dog I have ever had was an Australian Cattle dog/ Blue Healer. I never had to worry when my kids were playing on the ranch because she always protected them from the bull and snakes. I never had to worry when I was busy working either because she would never let the bull sneak up on me from behind.

Greater Swiss Mountain Dog. They don’t live the longest and they love the cold, but damn if that dog didn’t love everyone and everything with everything she had.
I may never get another dog, she was that good.

Probably my border collie mix. After owning basset hounds, I forgot how smart and obedient dogs can be. Very sensitive and slightly neurotic though, which I chalk up to her intelligence.

Brittany spaniel or red bone hound.

I've had lots of different dogs over the years but hand down for me it's Giant Schnauzer: big loveable goofballs with the family, but would tear your arm off if you messed with the family.

Doberman. I've had 2 and they are by far the best dogs I have ever had. Great Pyrenees is tops if you have chickens or goats, but they bark all night.

Always have had mutts, I have always had good dogs. Different, but perfectly trainable. My current one was found in a field. She came out of the box well mannered and readily trainable. Got super fortunate with her. She is truly an amazing specimen.
I did have a Boston Terrier as a kid. She was a really good girl. I think they are known to be good with kids.

The smartest was our mixed breed that my wife picked up at the gas station in Enon. She was everything someone could ask from a dog, she made it 15 years before passing last year. Gizmo was our Pug, if you want a couch buddy a Pug is great for that. They are prone to health problems, but Gizmo made it to almost 15 before he passed two months ago. We have two Dachshunds now who are loyal and can have tons of energy and they can be hardheaded.

We always had weiner dogs growing up that were awesome dogs.
I got my first shelter dog my senior year of college, and she’s been the best dog I’ve ever owned. She’s a redbone hound/Kir mix, can’t recommend them enough if you don’t mind hearing howling outside.

Get a dog that is suited for your living situation. Don’t get a super active breed if you don’t have a back yard.

Carolina Dog. But yes, adopt an older dog if you don't have a ton of energy and time.
