Planning a trip for May/June for a nice Caribbean/Costa Rica trip. Looking for something non all-inclusive, great food, and what most consider a top-tier destination. Price isn't really a concern on this one. So far we've got St. Thomas Costa Rica? What other islands or countries should I be considering?

I would scratch St. Thomas off of your list and replace it with St. John.

For what reasons? Less developed?

There are more places to stay in St. Thomas. With a rental jeep, you can ferry to St. John daily in 30 minutes. Not to mention, that's where you'll likely fly into.

St. Barts is the GOAT, but flying in is expensive, so it's more exclusive.

Seems like my wife and I are going to Punta Canta (SP?) in the Dom. Is this safe? None of you have mention it.

Caribbean/Costa Rica t

Not even remotely the same thing. Do some more research. In short, many of the Caribbean islands are stunning and beautiful but have been catering towards more tourists... Eat, drink, sleep, be merry. Costa Rica is more rugged, less commercialized and more adventure. Don't go to Costa Rica and expect to be pampered like some fat American tourist visiting Hawaii for Facebook pictures. Just to get fat and drunk... go for the adventures. It depends on what you're look for. I've been to both the East and west coasts of Costa Rica and nearly every tourist island in the Caribbean. I love st Maarten, the Dutch side.

St Thomas exists as a way to get to St John and the BVI. It pales in comparison.

In no specific order

St Barths
Anguilla
St John
BVI
TCI
St Kitts
Nevis

Stayed there last June, very nice resort. Nevis as a whole was very clean and safe unlike a lot of Carribean destinations.

Would say Barbados or grand Cayman. And while not technically in the Caribbean top choice would be Turks and Caicos.

That's pretty much what I said.

If you are looking to save a grand or two, you can get to SJ and BVI using ST as home base.

Cartagena, Colombia is technically in this category.

Very cheap in comparison to most Caribbean island locations, tons of people speak English and are very friendly, and you aren't trapped on an island with just a beach.

Very cool Historical District & Old Colonial Spanish forts to visit. Art Museums, Emerald Museums, cool wildlife / nature not to far outside the city. You can even travel to other Colombian coastal towns, Barranquilla or Santa Marta, with ease.

And babes. Lots of Latin babes who love gringos. This is the most important.

Did you just list half of the caribbean that you saw in a guide book.

From what I recall, Nassau and Freeport both suck arse.

Costa Rica is substantively different than the Caribbean. Understand that driving in Costa Rica is not much of an option as the roads there are generally abysmal. That doesn't preclude going and having a great time but don't think you can drive from Point A to Point B in the same way you can here.

In the Caribbean, St Kitts, Sint Maartin, Aruba, Barbados, Caymans, Turks & Caicos, USVI St John's would be good for me on a short list.

Avoid Jamaica, Puerto Rico, the Bahamas (Nassau & Freeport) and the Dominican Republic.

I've been to both and they both suck unless you stay at your resort. If you venture past your resort in those towns then you are essentially in the New Orleans housing projects. not friendly.
