Best comprehensive cancer care, Ochsner or LCMC?

LCMC is basically indigent care. Ochsner is entirely better.

Ochsner has the better facilities but LCMC probably has better staff. That said all I have are anecdotes, I know some fine doctors and nurse practitioners that work for Ochsner. I know fine ones that work at LCMC (they don't like the nurse practitioners as much though which according to TD should put them head and shoulders above ochsner automatically)



I have a friend alive today who had adolescent cancer (probably exogenous, related to the mill in bogalusa). I will never forget I was sitting with her waiting for class to start and she complained about some chronic back pain and I said 'you've had it too long you need to go to a doc and check that shite out don't wait!' lo and behold cancer of all things. After multiple cancer treatments Ochsner told her there was "nothing they could do for her." Her parents didn't accept this and took her to MD Anderson. She's now cancer free and has been for well over a decade now.

Let me restate that.

Ochsner doctors told her that she was going to die.
She went to MD Anderson.
She's been alive for 10+ years and is married with kids now.


on a side note I know at least at LCMC patients with covid are getting prescribed Plaquenil (hydroxychloroquine) as an adjunct, Friend told me a while back its still not used at Ochsner because, y'know, donald trump. So a facility worried about politics when prescribing meds probably has other concerns over patient wellness. which brings me to my next note


Ochsner got in trouble a few years ago because they were putting saudis and other internationals on the top of organ donor lists because they were paying $$$$. Sent a big company wide email threatening employees against talking to the press and assuring everyone "we totally aren't doing that anymore" so you've got shady practices on top of that.

All hospital systems are basically a business but "the big O" doesn't even try to hide it.

If you have the option and resources, MD Anderson would be my first choice. I've seen first hand how they care for someone there.

If that isn't an option, I'd choose the Pennington Center in BR (BR General) over Ochsner. Overall, I have always left dissatisfied when dealing with Ochsner.

For several reasons, MD Anderson is not an option.

Is the center in BR an option?

I know East Jefferson used to have a working relationship with MD Anderson... is that still valid? If so, maybe look at that?

Besides that... my experience has been that the Big O is better for complex care... but you are simply a number for regular stuff... and their admin is horrible.

LCMC is great if you get shot.

i would get to md anderson by any means necessary. Drs at mary bird misdiagnosed my dad and mistreated him for 4 months before finally giving the right diagnosis. we lost hope and went to MD Anderson and he didn't make it a week. Totally treatable leukemia if it was caught early.

Yeah, if we are talking leukemia (what I had) you should make every effort to get to MD Anderson. They have one of, if not the largest, leukemia centers in the country. A lot of the oncologists you'll see in most Louisiana hospitals are going to be what I call a general oncologist, meaning they work with a variety of types in all their patients and aren't specifically focused on one type.

At least go to MDA to get a care plan. Then get the actual treatment at home according to MDA's plan.

I went to Dr Padman also for radiation treatment. And I agree he was great. Easy to talk to and ask questions.

I don't feel the same way about the medical oncologist I'm seeing. It might be time for me to go to a different oncologist. Perhaps my experience at the EJ cancer treatment center is negative because of that.

If you don't mind me asking, what kind of cancer did you have?

What oncologist did you see?

You do know the CEO of Ochsner met with Trump multiple times during the peak of Covid? They worked really well together. Also kinda funny you bring up Saudi because y'know, Donald Trump.
