Postal service used to be a good job for those without degrees. I don't know about now though...

Trade school and apprenticeship path would likely be your best route. Welding especially, put licensed and appropriately trained plumbing and electrical make out well for not having a degree.

The longer you wait the less likely you will go back to school. Downgrade the truck to something cheaper, get a cheaper apartment or move home and find the cheapest community college you can get into. Do that for a year and then transfer to a better school.

Mechanic, UPS, could all be good options. If you work at a restaurant already, maybe try to get a shift leading position at a different bar/restaurant and work your way up.

Sales, most sales jobs that are not BS will pay well.

Electricians Plumbers and AC men make damn good money..... things 1st world people can't live without.

Get a skilled trade in either electrician or machinist. Industrial electricians and machinists make upwards of $40/ hour with unlimited overtime. If you get on with a good company, excellent benefits usually a company the wages.

Enjoy your next 6 years sucking some D at the train station and the drug addiction that will come from trying to forget about what you did that day.

Get working in plants through one of the local contractors, get a trade, get sponsored to go to trade school. Maybe become an operator or something like that.
This is exactly what I'm doing now.

Your first step is to sit down and figure out what you want to do. If you're only going back to school to make more money, you'll end up just as miserable...but with plenty of debt. Figure out your end goal and then plot out the steps you need to take to get there. And when I say end goal, I don't mean you have to have everything figured out.
best of luck.
best of luck.

that's good advice, if you've got a passion for something, no one has to light a fire under your arse, and there'll be nobody stopping you but you

If you do decide you want to work in the oilfield you'll find there are plenty of people like you in similar situations. And if you can pass whiz quiz you should be able to find something, though it might only be a roustabout type position at first. If you think you want to go back to school down the road save up your money from the field and use it towards that, I know plenty who did that as well. Good luck

How old are you?
Almost 23
I'd like to do the military if I can. I know that the army and amines at least aren't an option for me because I have a past arrest for marijuana. I'll look into the national guard and I have family in the Air Force that couple maybe pull some strings.
I can weld a little bit, but the the problem with trade school is I don't have the time or money for it. From what I hear you also have to go through an apprenticeship first and I need work with actual pay.
I know factory and plant type jobs can be hard to get into. What's the best way to get my foot in the door there?
Also I've considered trying to get on at a kitchen at an oil rig but I'm not really sure how to go about applying. Being from Birmingham, AL I don't really know too many people in the oil field industry.
