You have to to consider resale values. Not all cars depreciate at the same rate.
FWIW, I've bought (and sold some of) 17 cars over the last 16 years. I have a pretty good idea. I still think there's plenty of things worth throwing money at that aren't new cars (and I like cars, obviously). Keeping up with the Joneses just seems like a losing proposition.
That said, if it's your thing, go for it. Some of the things going for $50k these days aren't anywhere near being worth that much.

Everyone has a vice.. Some it's cars, others vacations, boats, hunting, golf, etc
I'm sure you too have one.

Lexus ES or GS - pick your poison.

But seriously.....what person in their right mind drops $50k into a depreciating asset?
Maybe people who have the money to not look at car buying as an investment...
I feel like this is a time warp back to 1998. How is 50k a lot of money to spend on a car in 2017?

Maybe a 2014 Lexus LX. Basically a luxury Landcruiser that will last 20 years.

I assume reliability and safety are high on the list for sedans:
Buick LaCrosse if you like big cars.
Infiniti Q50 if you like smaller, sporty sedans. Honorable mention to Chevy Impala, Toyota Avalon, and Hyundai Azera.
For sports cars, probably the Camaro.

I'm right there with you I don't think I'll ever buy new again. I purchased a 2 yo 65k car new for a little more than half of that.
Trucks in the other hand don't seem to depreciate as much as luxury cars due to popularity I guess

The average new car price is $35,000, $50k isn't exactly a lot
The entire car market (including their pricing) is propped up by aggressive lending and questionable financing. I think the average price would be lower if we were not in the era of 6 year loans for a car.
It actually seems like a bubble to me.

Buick is consistently in the top 5 in Consumer Reports for reliability. The Impala was the highest rated full sized sedan they tested.

Exactly. But apparently, if the neighbors know you bought it used, you're going to be seen as a poor.

Trucks and Jeeps (Wranglers and Grand Cherokees, not the rest of their shite) tend to hold value, especially in the south. It's a regional culture/utility thing.
I guess I've just gotten to a point where I want to buy a car, get it paid off and drive it til the wheels fall off. Trading up every couple of years just doesn't make sense to me anymore.
Posted on 4/28/17 at 8:27 pm to S1C EM
I think I'm maturing and financial security and responsibility has been making me think things over and I really don't see the point in doing the trade up every couple of years.
I guess part of it is that we really like the car that we have and it's paid off its really funny because last time we looked at cars we looked at a new car that was about 20k more than the one we own and it wasn't as nice as the one we have
