I've had a sudden urge recently to learn more about the Civil War, and was wondering what's some of the best literature out there.

What are some of the more informative, thorough, and accurate books concerning the Civil War? Anything and everything from key battles, important officers/generals, personal accounts, etc would be great. The book can be dense, I don't care.

I could of course Google "best Civil War books," but I am more interested in hearing from those that have studied the topic more extensively rather than just blindly looking at books on Amazon.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Shelby Foote trilogy

if you want 1 volume, Battle Cry Of Freedom by McPherson (be forewarned he is a huge lib and Clinton fanboy)

The Time-Life series has great illustrations and is fun to browse

i was actually going to include in my OP that I didn't want the suggested books to focus too much on slavery, but I assumed that if I did, it would get these kind of responses. Can't win around here I suppose

The topic of the Civil War intrigues me. Sorry for wanting to read

Three Months in the Southern States, Arthur Fremantle.

British officers account during a tour of the entire South, from Texas, through Louisiana and MS, and culminating at the Battle of Gettysburg. The guy basically witnessed the height of the war as an outsider.

I read some by yankees and some by southerners and thought the truth was somewhere in the middle. Also only read books written during and just after the war of northern aggression.

My mom was a history teacher... She had one with huge fold-out illustrated battlefield maps. Will ask her.

If you haven't checked out the Interactive Animated Maps at the Civil War Trust website - You should.

Have admiral Semmes memoirs of service afloat during the war between the states... Printed 1869. Never got around to reading it, although I'm sure it's interesting.

I'm not really worried about right or wrong or truth here.

I guess to put it bluntly, I really just want a dry, educational book. I don't care about ideology of the time (yes, i realize that is necessary to fully understand the social climate then). I just want to read about battles, personal accounts, strategic plans of generals, etc. I don't really care about the controversial stuff.

edit: thanks for the suggestions everyone. I'm going to check them all out

Shelby Foote's is pretty thorough and interesting. Had to read them in college for my Civil War course.
