He can’t afford it. He’s just saying that because he wants the attention and knows he won’t have to follow through

I'd love to see the math behind that. How many crossings a year does the current bridge have? How many will choose to pay the toll an go over that bridge? Will it connect to i-12 where much of the trucks driving through the state go?

Hell, I’ll get the thing financed if I can get paid back by tolls. It’s a win win for anyone - just calculate the anticipated tolls and structure the payback plus interest / it’s a no brainer

If the feds don't fund it I think that's the best option. I'll probably drive across it 4 times per year.

he’s not saying he will write a check, he’s saying his investment capital company will own the debt

This morning, on AMBR with Kevin and Bill, Jim Bernhard announced that his Bernhard Capital Group is willing to underwrite the bonds for a new Mississippi River bridge.

That sounds awesome but I guess I'm just skeptical that enough people would use a southern bypass. Even if you financed it over 30 years at 2.9% you'd have to have 45k crossings a day at $4 a pop just to break even.

The "new" bridge gets around 120k daily traffic but most of that is traffic coming from i-12 or to the core of BR. The old bridge gets around 20k daily traffic, and the sunshine bridge even less than that.

Couple this with i-49 being built which will take some traffic away from i-10.

So this will be for a new mini bridge for local traffic and they’ll keep the GBRB for interstate traffic? Or will it tie into I-10?

Where will they build

This is another bridge to tie into I-10 South of BR. Likely in Ascension.

Yet they built a bridge in St Francisville that probably 500 people use per day

the only way to do it would be to build it right next to the existing span and put the toll on one side. It would be painful to do that but it’s the only way

We’re just that good at fricking up traffic in Baton Rouge.

If they build it, people from Baton Rouge will likely bitch about the tolls.

I work across the river and I'd gladly buy a monthly pass for a toll. It would essentially knock 45 minutes off my trip home on a weekday. There are over 1,000 other people who would do the same, every day.

All you have to do is be in Port Allen at rush hour to see what I mean. It's one cluster frick trying to merge into another cluster frick. And to be honest, a new bridge would eliminate 3/4 of that cluster, which would help out the traffic going eastbound across the bridge at rush hour in the evening.

The state commission should entertain any and all private ideas like this one and negotiate the best deal.

Someone might want to build the bridge themselves and collect their own tolls. Or someone might want to finance the bridge like Bernhard suggested. Then you could negotiate the interest rate and details.

Better be EZ Tag only. We can’t even get people to use the current bridge without wrecks and break downs so throw a cash with change option into the mix and watch the shite Show.

My wife’s dad was management at a plant on west side of river, he commuted from denham and finally decided no matter how much money they offered him he was retiring because he wasn’t doing that commute anymore across the river.

Not saying BR shouldn't do it, however, should be fully aware there's close to 0% Bernhard doesn't significantly benefit from this. Additionally, while it may not be a zero sum game, it's probably pretty close.
