Dollar General has reported 31 consecutive years of growth and is opening new U.S. stores every day. In this video, WSJ takes an inside look at how the discount retailer keeps expanding while maintaining prices significantly lower than many grocery and drug stores.
The Economics of Dollar General

the damage is they are closing many rural groceries, as a certain demo is just as willing -- maybe even more willing -- to eat their processed food instead of fresh meats, fruits, and vegetables.

I believe it.
Two low paid employees max working at the same time.

Yep. Why venture out for vegetables when you can go get some orange Fanta and boxed Mac and cheese at the dollar store?

The one by me mercifully added a self checkout.

Usually only have 1-2 employees max at a time. The lines in those places are unreal and it usually looks like a tornado hit the inside of the store.

I see these stores in "towns" that don't even have a stop light. Traditional grocery stores need a certain base of population to be successful.
They are just filling a niche (along with Family Dollar)..It's great if you need a can of beans or some bug spray..you don't have to venture into the county seat...

Today someone showed me a picture of a Dollar General that was selling gasoline! Who knew? Then come to find out I was told that Dollar General sells gas in Clinton and Independence amongst other places.

If they are out in the middle of nowhere they should plant a garden. Then they can have a cucumber salad with the potted meat on a saltine.

The amount of overpriced shitty beach chairs and umbrellas they sell in a day down here is incredible.

There's not much in their foods that is a diabetic approved consumable. EVERYTHING is high carb and added sugars in some form or another.

Try again........there's a brand new Dollar General on Lockhart Rd here in Denham that sells......you guessed it, fresh fruit and vegetables!

And lots of shop lifting. I don’t know how they survive.

Uh oh, about to drop to 1 employee.

Fresh food is very perishable which cuts into the DG profit margin. Most of their other food can stay on the shelf for years.

I hear ya brother. Certainly wasn't arguing, I was truly amazed when I saw this! And even more so, I learned today that they are selling gasoline at some stores as well! Now THAT really blew me away.
