Before you repair your home, look into your contractor.

After Katrina, New Orleans was flooded (pun intended) with fly by night contractors. They performed subpar work, and sometimes took payment and ran without doing anything.
Do not be taken advantage of. Only use local contractors who are licensed and insured. Ask for references, a good contractor will gladly give them to you.
Remember, cheap work isn't good and good work isn't cheap.

Sub contractors need to be hesitant before they jump on a project. It's going to take weeks for insurance companies to start cutting checks to those affected. Always ask for half up front.

Sound advice considering my grandmother got taken to the cleaners by a couple white guys after Katrina. What makes your advice more poignant is that a mix of 3 or 4 groups of Hispanics and another crew of black guys actually did the work the white ones skated on at a discount.
Moral to the story is due diligence is way more important than skin color. If you're in LP, you should probably pay more attention to rotting teeth and skin sores than skin pigment. By all means though spread your solid advice to all those who'll listen.

What's sad is he's got 23 up votes so far.

I was living in Houma for Gustav/Rita and we saw the same deal. They were like vultures riding through the neighborhoods.

They especially prey on the elderly, so if you have older parents, or a nice old lady on your street, etc who needs repairs, suggest someone for them.

Also, I just want to add this. After gustav, I had roof damage, had to replace the front door and french doors to a shop in my back yard.
I hired a contractor who was known for doing good work, but there were so many people looking for contractors and he got greedy and wasn't turning down any jobs. He ended up hiring a bunch of mexicans and dropping them off at different locations to start removing shingles on roof tops then he hired some other guys to do small task like put in doors, etc and the guy who put in my door screwed it up, I ended up having to get someone else. That might be something to keep in mind as well.
And I think bee mentioned the most important part make sure they are licensed and insured. Don't let the guy who isn't insured give you a line of bullshite or make sure they are not working under someone else's license.

Legit contractors will be insured. You can use LAWORKS.net to see if any Louisiana contractor carries workers comp, which can aid in finding legit contractors.

Seriously folks, demand a license and copy of their certificate of insurance.
Go to the lslbc.louisiana.gov website to verify the license is accurate.
If they aren't licensed and they don't have insurance, if they arse up your home you have no recourse.
