Those geologists saved a bunch of lives. Good on them and thankful that they listened.

It’s sad they sent the college boys in to “fix” the problem when they could’ve sent in a team of roughnecks to keep this from happening

Global cooling caused the ice to build up to a point the weight couldn't be sustained any more.

Switzerland is a place you have to see to believe it. It doesn’t even look real while you are there.

Lake Oeschinensee is probably the most beautiful place I've ever seen. It was easily my favorite stop we made while in country.

Going to be near Blatten in a couple weeks so been following the evacuation over the last few days. They got everyone (except perhaps the one missing) as well as cattle and livestock out of there. Terrible situation for everyone who lost their homes and land.

I see they are reporting only 1 missing. Is that correct? If so, it appears most of the people evacuated prior to the collapse. If so, how were they warned?

No it's in the Bernese oberland. Matterhorn is apparently way further south. I had to go back and look it up.

From Grok:

quote:

The people of Blatten, Switzerland, were evacuated prior to the Birch Glacier collapse on May 28, 2025, due to proactive monitoring and warnings from geologists and local authorities. Geologists had been closely observing the glacier and the surrounding mountainside for weeks, noting signs of instability. Specifically, they identified that the mountain behind the glacier was crumbling, with cracks appearing in the ice and rockfalls occurring, which suggested an imminent risk of a large-scale avalanche or landslide. Estimates indicated that between four to six million cubic meters of rock and debris were unstable, and the glacier's movement had accelerated to about 1.5 meters per day by May 27.

On May 19, 2025, based on these assessments, authorities ordered the evacuation of Blatten’s approximately 300 residents, along with all livestock, as a precautionary measure. This decision was informed by reconnaissance flights, webcam monitoring, and expert analysis, which provided evidence of the glacier's rapid destabilization. The early warning and evacuation likely prevented a greater tragedy, although one person, a 64-year-old man, was reported missing after the collapse.

Curious where they should build towns in mountainous regions if not in the valleys.
