Not sure if this will play.

Cicada killer

I have a video of one and will post if I can locate it. I heard a cicada and all of a sudden this big arse wasp swooped in. It stung it or whatever they do and then scooped it up and flew off.

Pretty badass actually.

Should I be concerned there’s a Yellowjacket nest in the ground near my mailbox then?

Yes because they've been known to invade homes

The orange abdomen tells you it’s a queen, which also explains the size.

Even a queen isn't 1.5" long but I am going to have to assume the size was exaggerated like every 5' gator someone sees near the camp and it is 8-9' by the time its pictures hit FB.

I wish you were more terrified of a mosquito than this hapless insect.

quote:

Over the course of 200,000 years, 108 billion people have lived on Earth. And nearly half, 52 billion, have been killed by mosquitoes. The effect of this disastrous insect has shaped civilization far beyond our expectations, according to historian Timothy C. Winegard, whose new book, The Mosquito: A Human History of Our Deadliest Predator, explores this lethal insect.

The wings don't seem to be the right color for a cicada killer. A cicada killer has reddish-brown or rust color wings. The one he killed has dark colored or black wings. The markings near the head also don't seem right to be a cicada killer.

Also, Cicada Killers don't have the orange abdomen. It doesn't look like a Cicada Killer at all.

It is a Southern Yellowjacket queen, and the other poster is probably correct that it was looking for a place to overwinter before starting a new colony in the Spring.

The Killer Bees!

I knew the whole movie was bullshite when they got the air conditioning in the Dome to work. (It was notoriously deficient when the Dome first opened, particularly in the early season games when it was still hot and humid. Much like today...)

Definitely. Watched it as a kid and if I remember right there was a cutaway scene of a train going around a mountain and on the screen flashed "60 miles from Houston". The attention to detail in that movie was stellar.
