Why is it that satellites orbiting Earth have sent images to a program that allow me to zoom in on my house and read my name written in the driveway from 20 years ago, but department stores still use 1999 Nokia phone quality cameras at a range of 5' and you still can't make out the logo on this guys shirt.

Show me the drive way image with your name and I'll continue this
It's cost related. My home security is awesome, because I spent what was required

Should I tell you where my spare key is also, maybe the combination to the safe?
Google Maps my friend, it's an amazing piece of software.
ETA:
Surely these stores have to consider their products valuable enough to warrant modern security measures. That's all I'm saying.

They are not trying to catch shoplifters.
They are more worried about employee theft.
If the camera is good enough to make out the employee that is all they care about.
Trying to catch a shoplifter is risky and trying to recoup the stolen goods is hard.

All of this. One crooked employee can devestate a profit margin. These stores have accepted a certain amount of "shrink" caused by the public. They have to minimize internal theft and damaged merchandise. It's much easier to control those two.

Insurance baw

It takes a big set of balls to walk out a store with a cart full of items and not think about paying. When you get to that level of confidence, Id imagine he has done this many times before.

Are you saying that they have insurance that covers stolen merchandise? If so, you are mistaken. That's called shrink and comes directly out of their profit margin. I worked at Home Depot in college and it was amazing the stuff that people would just walk out the front door with. I'm talking pressure washers and mowers. Some would not even leave the store, but rather go straight to the return desk for a refund. I remember them saying they had to sell like 4 or 5 riding mowers to break even on 1 stolen one. Riding mowers and power tools like Dewalt drills had the lowest margin, but highest shrink.
