I was stopped at FSU to check it out on a drive through Tallahassee. At the time I called it "Baton Rouge with Palm Trees."

That’s what made me think about this, I remember a committee studying to be more like Austin. If they were being realistic, Tallahassee should have been the goal and not Austin

I would submit that a big advantage that both Austin and Tallahassee have over BR is the proximity to their college campuses to their downtowns. It sort of forced both to remain rather vibrant areas. LSU opted to move to a more suburban locale (it doesn't seem so much now, but it certainly was then) in the 1920s, and it really did a lot to spur the growth of BR away from focused on the city center. Standard Oil certainly played a part in that as well, which made BR much more industrial than places like Austin or Tallahassee.

Everyone hints at demographics as the main issue, but there were others at play here as well. I think BR would be a much different place if LSU had stayed adjacent to downtown.

I spent some time in Tallahassee and it struck me how different the 2 cities are, yet possess similar attributes. Both state capitals are older cities that are home to large public universities and HBCUs. Both are similar in size, with BR being a little bigger but with a declining population and Tallahassee’s population size increasing. Tallahassee isn’t a “safe” city and has its crime problems but it’s much safer than BR and BR’s crime problems are getting worse.

Tallahassee felt like a city on the rise while BR continues to decline. BR officials should look at Tallahassee as the model for turning things around

You are right about the similarities.

I think, sadly, that the major reason for what you stated is that one of these cities is in Florida and the other is in Louisiana.

The closest this city ever came to even attempting to make an effort at being a cool city was when Kip was mayor. Pat Screen did a half assed attempt at it, but every other mayor we’ve had seems to want to let it do whatever it will and do nothing. They’re perfectly fine with sitting inside watching TV and letting it fall to shite, watching people move further and further out as the big ugly encroaches, and no big deal. That’s become the BR way.

Demographics dude.... Most people who can afford to leave EBR do so, that is why the city's undesirable demographic changes have occurred.

How do you convince middle class people to move to an area with poor public schools, high crime, and screwed up local government?

It was doing alright until Mayor Broome started enforcing open container laws. She waged open war on 3rd street and killed much of it before Covid

Tallahassee is surprisingly hilly

This made me chuckle. I remember hearing from some runners that did a 10k or something there say the same thing. It does have some hills but the highest point in Florida is like 341 feet above sea level. It has the lowest high point of the 50 states. To say it’s hilly is funny but I get what your saying…
I also agree with all the folks saying any city should be what BR strives to be.
But let’s be honest most of the capital cities in the south are shiteholes. Montgomery, Jackson, Little Rock, Baton Rouge….
Liberal leadership by city government is what it is.
Also Big cities on the Mississippi River tend to all be horrible. New Orleans, BR, Memphis, St. Louis.
Again, Liberal leadership.

It's a simple question. The guy explained in detail why it made him chuckle (and I would think why you found it surprisingly noteworthy) ultimate agreeing with you and you respond like a dick. I don't like dicks. I liked your observation and his discourse on it, though. So I didn't really understand why you felt the need to respond the way you did.
