At the time I lived in Hunters Glen off Jefferson near Hoo Shoo Too. So not too far from I believe it was Briarwood where one of the victims lived. One afternoon my wife and toddler daughter are out in the yard pulling weeds. We lived in a curve. Wife saw a white truck in street stopped in curve but thought nothing of it. Few minutes later truck is still there and notices it’s a black guy behind the wheel looking at her. Started working her way to back door and looked one more time and he’s still sitting there. When she looked this last time he slowly drove off. They got inside quick and called me. Have always thought it was DTL and never slept without a gun on night stand again until he was caught.

I know there are connections to Brandon Laverne on here.
As for that guy... guess we'll never truly know, but I'd guess his body count is higher than just 2. There were always rumors that other trophies of missing women were found in his house, but no other charges were ever brought.
In relation to that, I went to high school with a guy named Brandon Scott Lavergne, but it was a different guy than the one that killed Mickey Shunick. He said his poor mom got death threats for weeks until everyone finally realized it wasn't the same BSL.

When he was caught the community breathed a sigh of relief but nobody realized there were two more working out there in BTR...
The 2 guys that got the warrant for DTL DNA were Joel Odom and David McDavid. Joel was a detective at East Feliciana SO at the time and McDavid worked for Zachary PD. I went to HS with Joel. Really smart guy and overall good dude. McDavid is now the Mayor of Zachary.
They never really got the recognition they deserved for helping solve the case. They were a backdrop at the press conference with BRPD chief and the FBI glory hounding.
Joel told me sometime later when they showed up to swab him for the DNA they knew they had him. They didn’t have enough for an arrest warrant at the time. He bolted to ATL as soon as they left with the swab.
Pretty good story on how it all unfolded

I’ve posted this story before:
In either 1993 or 1994, my mom, brother and I were driving back to New Orleans from Texas. My brother and I were either 12/13 and 11/12 at the time. So that means my mom was late 40’s.
Anyway, it was dark on the basin bridge, probably around 9pm, and my mom’s car started making weird noises, so we pulled over to one of those call box things and pressed the button. Nothing happened and we waited for about 20 minutes. We took off and the car started making noises again, so my mom exited at Butte La Rose to get to a pay phone.
Well, on our way to the pay phone a man asks if we need help and my mom told him the car was making a weird noise. Then she got real quiet and said ‘we are just using the pay phone’ then man says ‘well, I can drive you to a gas station to see if there’s help, but he has to stay here, I’m only taking you ladies.’ He was talking about my brother, and my brother grabbed my hand, and my mom said ‘no thanks, we are not too far from home’ or something to that effect.
Well, none of us said a word and we made it home to New Orleans. Flash forward to 2004, and the arrest of Sean Vincent Gillis was on the tv, even in NOLA. And I’m telling my husband about the story of what happened in Butte La Rose, two minutes later my mom calls and says did I see that serial killer on tv that was arrested, didn’t he look like the guy at Butte La Rose, and then my brother calls a few minutes after that, saying the same thing.
I have no idea if it’s the same guy or not, but it sure in the hell looked like him.

DTL murdered a girl down the street from me. I got questioned by police bc I drove a white truck.
Another idiot neighbor broke into her house and got arrested. Allegedly, he thought the cops weren’t doing a good enough job, so he wanted to go investigate the scene himself.

I was in grad school at the time. I was a young, white male that drove a Ford Ranger and lived near campus. I was pulled over and followed by cops several times. I knew what they were doing, so I was okay with it.
Crazy times to say the least.

I wear size 12 shoes and I was between 25-35 at the time. I’m also white. A girl I worked with suspected me because I hit all those marks so she called the law. Had to give a swab of DNA. It wasn’t me.

Not sure if serious, but please point out the part of the constitution that deals with profiling.

That was a crazy time to be in BR. The entire town in such heightened awareness and stress for so long.
When you really think about all the crap in BR the last 20-25 years it’s really fricking nuts and lawless with communities of trauma left behind.
The serial killers, the cop murders, the floods, the hurricanes, the damn mall shootout, St. George, etc etc it’s a fricking dramatic wasteland.

ETA I also know a woman that’s a former prostitute that swears DTL picked her up a few times during his killing spree
Please more details here.

Pretty scary knowing that a murder took place right next door to your door.
TBH that would probably affect me in some way but maybe that’s me being weird.

You had the Bayou strangler, Ronald Dominique, around the same time. Murdered 23 men and boys from 97-2006.

You left off the DC Sniper.

It was maroon. It’s believed he abducted Mari Ann Fowler in it Christmas Eve 2002 at Subway on Hwy 415 in Port Allen. He sold the truck after and it was found but no relevant DNA recovered.
