Baton Rouge is among places that are a "more than average" level of racist, according to The Washington Post. New Orleans, however, ranks among places "less than average."

The newspaper published findings from a study in PLOS ONE, which analyzed Google data for searches containing the n-word and its contextual variants (like those used in music lyrics).

The result is a map of the United States, which researchers say shows, region by region, the racism in various parts of the country. Racism, however, is difficult to quantify and difficult to pinpoint, but researchers believe the online searches are an indicator of private thought not censored by social norms.

The areas researchers called the racist were concentrated most heavily along the Appalachian Mountains running through the Northeast, as well as a patch in the the central Deep South.

So there isn't a place that has an average amount of racism?

What would be a non-racist search purpose?

Interesting statistical analysis. I don't think there's much denying the findings, however the underlying principle of their research is a little faulty.

Good article. Have an upvote.

all this did was show who googles the n word more? And then label them racist?

Did they subtract the searches by people who are allowed to use the n-word?

Probably has to do with the 50/50 population and how closely they mingle in BR. I bet many of those "not racist" people have zero life experience around African American thugs

Wait, so places with a lot of rap listeners are racist? Out of all of the dumbest chart/maps, this is probably #1.

(The authors attempted to control for variants of the N-word not necessarily intended as pejoratives, excluding the "a" version of the word that analysis revealed was often used "in different contexts compared to searches of the term ending in '-er'.")
