Baton Rouge for the most part is a four alarm dumpster fire. Good food though.

Yeah BR was a much nicer place 25-30+ years ago

this past week is the most uninterrupted time I’ve spent in BR in 30 years. Although my office is in BR I rarely ever am here at night

I don’t even recognize it as the place I grew up in.

Downtown WELSH is undergoing a revival. Maybe some of you dissatisfied BR folks should consider moving to those mean streets

People will point to things like midcity gentrification but for every area that's improving there have been 10 that have gone downhill.

Best thing that I've ever done was to move out of Louisiana. You don't realize just how screwed up Louisiana, especially Baton Rouge and NOLA, is until you move out.

I occasionally go back to visit my family in BR but after 2 days I'm ready to go back Colorado.

I’m quite sure middle aged people said the exact same thing 30 years ago

overall city leadership in Baton Rouge and Nola is among the nation worst overall. It’s sad because how great the people are, but now are fleeing to Texas

Everyone wants to tout midcity/govt street area, but it largely looks like crap imo.

I would regale you with the litany of roadblocks to full redevelopment or government street but you wouldn’t believe me...

non conforming lots
haphazard ancient zoning
stunning incompetence in city/parish district offices
horribly expensive utility upgrade needs
rampant crime and homelessness a block or two away

we are redeveloping the lot between st rose and Lavinia right now and can’t get any momentum

NBR is too close for comfort, IMO. The criminal element is always on the prowl, in and around mid city. There’s still a high chance of getting burgled or worse.

I can remember when a pretty decent amount of NBR wasn't bad. I remember my buddy's mom dropping us off in the parking lot at Metro Bowl when we were like 10 yrs old for summer bowling league

That place brings back some memories. We used to go to places all around Plank and Airline right near there a lot in the 80s. Rip Howard Bros.

That area looks like Mogadishu now. Drove through there last week trying to find an out of the way gas station with reasonable lines.

Looks like proper trash disposal is illegal.

I moved to the midwest about a year ago, and was absolutely shocked the first time I went downtown and saw city employees with brooms and dustpans and small golf kart sized versions of those street cleaning trucks going around cleaning the sidewalks. It hadn't occurred to me that places actually hire people to do that.

I grew up in north Baton Rouge in the 70s. I went to Prescott. We didn't lock our doors of our cars or home. Played all over the neighborhood without a worry in the world. Plank road had wonderful, thriving businesses. What a shite hole it has become. Sad to see it.

BR is bad but places like Central are good safe places to be left alone in. There's not a lot of suburbs in America where you can get good sized yards, decent schools, decent construction (anything built pre-Katrina) and not have to worry about everything not bolted down getting stolen for as cheap as you can get that here.

The thing that sucks is that its trashy, not a lot of great food places, and not as much white collar opportunity as maybe some other places like ATX, Houston, Dallas, ATL, etc.

That’s my problem with BR - it has all of the cons of NOLA but not many of the pros.

And most of the indigenous ppl are in denial.
